My husband got diagnosed with 3rd stage rectum cancer 1 year before and after 1 year of Radiation, Surgery and Chemotherapy we got to know 2 days back that now it is Metastasis Colorectal Cancer in Lungs, Abdomen, Prostate and Tail bones. Either it happened along with the chemotherapy or it happened within 1 month after Chemo. The largest tumor is in Lungs and at Lungs Radiation and surgery is not possible. Dr suggested to go for Chemotherapy again but it will be experimental on him. We have been told that there is no cure to this and if this Chemo doesn't work he might not even have an year and if Chemo goes well then he might have 5-10 years.
Is there anyone who survived this disease? My husband is just 28 years old and we just got married.

I'm sorry about the recent diagnosis and spread. As you will see on this site many people do get better even with significant obstacles facing them. I would suggest getting a second opinion at a major cancer center. I have found that second opinions are extremely helpful in treatment options. You also might put details into your signature line like type of cancer etc as many people will more likely respond and suggest options. Disregard expiration dates unless a persons health is really poor. A person thoughts about cancer expiration are deadlier than cancer. Peace to you. Bob

I am very sorry to hear about this. My mom just got diagnosed back in Feb and is in stage 3A no spread to organs but has one lymph affected. I'm so sad that they are taking their precious time with her mapping and simulation and prob will start now july 5th with chemo/radiation. I'm scared that it will spread from that point. She is in pain right now, it's awful to see her so unhappy and in pain kinda like suffering. She can't go anywhere due to her bathroom issues and she just can't enjoy life like she used to.

I am praying for a full response after surgery. I researched for the best colorectal surgeon on the west coast at USC, we met already. She will do neoadjuvant chemotherapy for 6 weeks, than wait 2 months, than surgery in the fall. I go through my strong days and than weak days. I use to work in the cancer center, radiation oncology so I saw a lot of things. I'm writing on behalf of my mother who doesn't own a computer or can type to reach out. I'm getting a colonoscopy this july, a little nervous but need to get it done. Best wishes to you. Yes get a 2nd opinion. I had to switch my mom's insurance around to get her the best dr's. I quit my job to be with my mom this summer and she will be staying with me. I have all of her meds, hospital bed, home health care, toilet commode, pain meds, etc. you name it. Hang in there.. lots of prayers. xo

Hi ,
My mum has had a reasonable amount of cancer . Over twelve mets to date, I think . I am losing track. A met popped up in her lung last year which the consultant insists was all part of the original spread just deciding to manifest itself. Chemo did a fantastic job and despite a very quick recurrence it quickly disappeared again allowing other options to be explored.
Eight years and doing ok .Who knows what's ahead but lots of good times have been had over the years.
Take care,
Court

What about immunotherapy? It's a new treatment option that has shown success in fighting tumors.

It's very complicated and I second the suggestion of getting an appointment at a major cancer center.

I am so sorry that your young husband has been diagnosed after your marriage. Don't give up yet. Good luck!

Here's a few recent threads dealing with immunotherapy.

Male diagnosed with stage 4 rectal + mets to lung on 11th July 2007 at age 60.
Radiation, chemo, surgery, more chemo, more surgery etc from Aug 2007 to October 2009.
Low anterior resection and colonic J-pouch, and a left lower lobectomy, as well as miscellaneous other surgical procedures.
No longer any evidence of cancer.

If you and your husband are not happy with your doctors, then by all means get a 2nd opinion.

I had complete faith in my oncologists, gastroenterologists and surgeons, and I feel that this is important,
so I sincerely hope that you find specialists that you trust fully.

Your husband is more than 30 years younger that I was when I received my cancer treatment, and
while he is physically stronger than I was as a 60 year old patient, it is important that he remains
mentally strong for as long as possible.

We all have different levels of endurance and strength, and you both should seize every form of support that
you can find. Your support will fortify him.

I am not as “cancer smart” as many others on this website, but all throughout my treatment:

1. I did as I was told by my doctors.
2. I completed the treatments even though I needed drugs to help me get through them when the going got tough.
3. I tried to be a good patient when in hospitals. (The pathetic behavior of some younger male patients shocked me.)
4. I trusted my doctors completely, and never questioned them once I had committed myself to their treatment.

This worked for me. I am 70 years old now, and I am reasonably active in spite of all the after effects of cancer.

I am not as knowledgeable as others on this website, so I agree that more details of your husband’s treatment
to date will help others give you much better advice than I can give.

Please forgive me if I appear unemotional about your situation, but please believe me when I say that I understand
the pain and anguish that you are going through.

Wish your husband good luck from me,

Taexali

I just got diagnosed with stage IV after a year of NED. I'm also 28. Definitely get a second opinion and get some books! I've been reading a lot about diet and nutrition and the right foods to eat to help my body. It isn't easy but I gotta try.

I'm sorry to hear of your situation. I agree with behconsult. I think you can get more responses if you put your information in your signature.
In this way people can see a summary of your situation and may be encouraged to post a reply.

Please, please, please get second (and probably third) opinions at major cancer centers.

It's unlikely your road will be easy, but with the right team it could be long. You'd be amazed at the stories of how much cancer people have eliminated with treatment. There is so much that can be done these days. And so many new drugs and procedures in development. But at a local hospital, most of that won't be an option. Get to a major cancer center as soon as you can.

Also, that spread sounds crazy. Bone metastases and prostate metastases are both quite rare. I don't understand how that all could have happened all of the sudden. You'd do well with a second opinion on everything, I think.

I am so sorry to hear about your predicament. I wish your husband well. Please find a doctor team that will fight for your husband's life. The good news is your husband is young, I hope he fights and beats this.
