This could be LONG ... very long !

Postby CRguy » Thu Jun 22, 2017 11:23 pm

Coming from the caregiver side right now
BTDT twice B4
bringing all my family support, vet med, caregiver, Stage IV CRC survivor experience to bear on this converstaion .....

This Could Be LONG ..........

been offline a few days ( daze ?? )
geriatric mother (89) slipped / fell / broke hip
5 hour drive away so I am here now having arrived the same afternoon as the incident.

She was scooped up by a multitude of friends / AmbuMedics and taken to local hosp her GP does ER rounds at
AND moved to major regional hosp same day after triage and xrays
Surgery next a.m. with the expert ortho honcho

She has great Doc and I would say out of 6 nurses ...5 are outstanding, 1 is very skilled but not warm and fuzzy

Having BEEN a patient a number of times I know, while it may be hard and seem impossible ...

Sometimes patients HAVE TO BE PATIENT

Mom is a tough old Viking lady, kicks ass and takes no prisoners ....
( where did I get that from :?: )
so here is ME who actually knows shit from shinola ...
trying to explain to her "Yes the surgery is done BUTT you need some hosp care / rest / rehab before you can go home "

WELL yada yada yada
wot about this
why am I here
why can't I heal at home

BECAUSE YOU CAN'T EVEN GET OUTTA THE EFFIN BED FOR EFF SAKE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

there, feel better now

I will tell her like it IS

sometimes even on this forum folks come here wanting to hear what they WANT to hear
and get pissed when they don't
suck it up buttercup !

LIFE is what it is, and while it may not always be what it seems

it IS STILL the life you are living
so find a way to deal with it and move forward

what IF ... ain't worth shit sometimes

WHAT IS ... is golden and we all need to embrace that and move on
in any and every way we can

THIS new Journey is gonna be a bee-atch

patience will be at a premium

JMO

thanx for lending a friendly ear homies

so this is CR back in the thick of things
and personally while I hate doing the CRC patient thing
I get that being a caregiver may sometimes, and in some ways, be WORSE than being the actual patient

Wow CRguy,

There is always something right?
Your poor mother, fractures are not Fun  I got 3 in October and am still not back to 'me before'..
and I'm not 89

So with a 5hour drive you will not be able to visit her much I presume? Great to hear about the "multitude of friends", not everyone has that at 89 years of age. A thing to be thankful of? WORD ? (Did I use that correct  )

Yes at times you feel quite helpless as a caregiver.
All the best to you and your tough Viking Mom !

Wise words! Fingers crossed that she recovers well.
I'm just a dude who still can't believe he had a resection and went through chemo (currently 13 years NED). Is this real life?

I feel for you because I KNOW I'm a much better patient than caregiver. I have zero patience and I'm with you on the suck it up buttercup thinking. That being said, your poor mom!! Hope she recovers quickly.

Sending out good thoughts to your mom. I feel YOUR pain. You and I have been on very similar journeys in many ways. I think we both lost our dads to the same horrible disease. My mom has been an (unhappy) widow for a long time. She's ninety now and really struggling. She was always a fiesty, capable, independent woman who could handle anything. Now, she lands in the hospital every few months for one thing or another. She lives alone and probably shouldn't, but she won't have it any other way...at this point. I agree, it's tough being the caregiver. I have a somewhat helpful brother. How about you, do you have any help?

Good luck, CRGuy.

Sorry to hear about your mom. I'm wishing her a speedy recovery!

I do believe being a care giver is the hardest because you have so little control over their own choices and feelings. This is where patience comes in handy!

I'm wishing you good luck too!

as for the humour …. you have an equally warped sense as I do !!!! well done :D

hey Ann I recall those discussions in past and the moving forward is a challenge. There is only ONE CRguy ( yes only child ) BUTT her community and especially the church congregation/pastor are her “surrogate” family in town here. Very grateful for their support and they are WONDERFUL folks.

Joannerogers
yes I am a bit of a control freak when things are in my court BUTT that is because of life experiences … I KNOW THIS SHIT !!!!
Still will be a challenge

SitRep update :
rehab/physio folks were with her day 1 post-op. Tweaked her pain meds and now past post GA delrium/confusion so much brighter and more herself today than when I wrote the initial post. Will still be a long haul but more optimistic she will continue to do well.

Do not mess with tough old Viking ladies

So sorry to hear about your mother.

I too am swing chickens for a speedy recovery.

It's amazing how they have improved that surgery. At one time, long hospital stay followed by long rehab stay. A friend of mine broke her hip last years. Surgery, out of hospital in a few days. She was in rehab about 3 weeks, then home. I will admit her granddaughter moved in with her to help her, She could not be alone just yet. She used a walker for a couple of months, than a cane and now nothing.

I hope it's that way with your mom. She sound like a wonderful lady.

All the best to you and your Mom,

Lee

Sorry to hear it! That kind of fall is rough, especially with tough, independent patients. <:- )
