Tonsils ? Who's had them out ?

Postby Jimswife » Wed Jun 21, 2017 8:27 am

My husband has to have his tonsils out tommorow , I've heard it's really bad as an adult , the pain is meant to be horrific after he's one bigger than the other and started with a sore throat as we all did over xmas , bad viral infection that everyone round here had , he had antibiotics but said his throat still niggles every now n then , the oncologist referred him to ent doc and he's suggested just removing them because of his history , had colon cancer stage 3 6 years ago ( been well since )
Anyway the onc says never in his career has he known colon cancer spread to the tonsils , we have looked online and it's says extremely rare , like only 8 cases or something ever documented worldwide .... that say tonsil cancer is also super rare ..... but it's still a worry , so who's had there tonsils out here as an adult ? And how bad is it honestly ??
Victoria , Wife to Jim age 43 dx oct 2011
Stage 3 cc with 2 out of 21 positive lymph nodes
Folfox starts nov 11-may 12
All scans and bloods since surgery confirm no evidence of disease
Hoping to stay ned forever .... Fingers crossed !!!!!!!

I had my tonsils out 5 years ago. At first the pain was excruciating, I woke up in the recovery room crying. They give you some good pain medication. The key is to drink, all the time, to keep the throat moist. Also, have him sleep in a partial sitting position. I stacked 2 pillows and used a travel pillow around my neck to make it comfortable. Oh, and forget the old "all the ice cream he can eat" stuff. Stock up on pudding, applesauce and Jell-O.

The main concern with adult tonsillectomies is the blood vessels in the neck. My surgeon insisted that I take 2 weeks off work so I didn't cause any stress to my throat or neck.

I had mine out about five years ago at age 40. The procedure didn't produce much post-operative pain in itself, but about 2-3 days later I developed an infection that hurt like the dickens. It definitely felt like there were razor blades scraping away in my throat. Definitely keep on top of any infection to avoid major pain!

What surgical method is the surgeon going to use? I had mine out via coblation. I had huge tonsils (they almost touched each other when I was well), which caused me sleep apnea. My ENT removed my tonsils and reshaped my soft palate, almost completely removing my uvula.
