Hi,

I am 36 yr old male and I had rectal bleeding for five years on and off.
In the last year or so, it been severe with frequent bleeding and increased blood volume.
I even had involuntary bleeding couple of times.

I hv family history of piles..and can feel a visible external pile in my bottom.
given it is painless and i hv been ignoring it, but involuntary bleeding made me to
go an see and specialist and he suggested colonoscopy even though he is certain it is 80 % piles.

anyone with similar symptom shed some light ?

when i go toilet, the bleeding is profuse..and dripping at times and the toiler bowl is
at times splattered with blood.

is it just piles ? or anything serious ?

When in doubt, Scope it out!

Seriously any sign of blood needs to have a scope, and not just an anoscope, or sigmoidscope - scope the whole enchilada.
I first started having some mild bleeding around 29 years of age. All the docs just said its most likely some hemorrhoids, etc.. etc..
I had my first visit specifically about it to GI doc around 36 years of age. Even then he performed an anoscope, saw a couple inflamed hemorrhoids and very small fissure and said that's probably it. Too young for cancer etc.. etc..
He said he could do a full scope if I wanted, but thought it not necessary. A couple years later I had an endoscopy done by a different GI doc and she said she could do a colonoscopy at the same time, but didn't think it was necessary either given my age - even though I was still having periodic bleeding. Finally 6 years later I told my gen doc I wanted to have a scope because of blood. First ran me through fecal tests and they did show blood so they could write up a GI visit for scope - result stage IIIb cancer. Always get a scope when you see blood is my advice. No matter the age and no matter the doc recommendation.

thanks guys..any side effects of colonscopy ? is it painful ? doc said sedation..but that means injection right ?

and is that the ultimate test ? and would it definitely tell if I hv cancer or not ?

and can they not distinguish if the blood is for piles or colonoscopy by any other method ?

given I did not have cancer symptoms like weight loss etc, how likely this to be cancerous ?

also I been having some sticky and bloody stuff coming out ? would piles cause this ? also occasional sensation like something vibrating in my bottom..
I am freaking out....................

It's moderately painful even without sedation.
In some countries colonoscopy without sedation is a norm.

The biggest risk is 0.1% to 0.5% chance of a colon perforation.
This is a reason colonoscopy is not done for the sake of entertainment.

No it would not.
Cancer can be missed in case of unskilled colonoscopist especially in case of inadequate "preparation".

You better ask your boyfriend about it. :)

It's OK to freak out.
Many people do this.
You just need to understand that this is not the end of your life.

All these "cancer symptoms like weight loss etc," are for late stage cancer.
You want to identify it earlier to have a better chance of survival.

You will be out for the colonoscopy itself, so it won't be painful. Prep for it sucks, but you need to do this.

As stated, usual method includes sedation - so you won't feel anything during scope - unless you're in an area where they don't put you under.

Scope is best option to find out the cause of lower GI bleeding. Nothing else can really confirm the reason.

I had zero weight loss prior to my diagnosis. In fact I felt fantastic, better than mid 20's health wise.

This is what concerns me most. I had periodic bleeding in stool for years, but this was one of the main symptoms that got me to DEMAND a scope.
Increased bleeding and some mucous with blood - which I still am having about once a weak - post OP and mid Chemo - Go figure.

But relax, breathe, get the scope scheduled, make sure to do the full cleanse so everything can be seen easily, then get results. Then you can know either way what your next step is.

Get a colonoscopy! Yes, they can tell you precisely the source of the bleeding. The colonoscopy does not hurt given the sedation, and it's over in 15 min. It is really not too bad but the prep sucks, i admit. But you really don't have a choice at this stage. Get the colonoscopy to get an answer!

You have put this off far to long,,bleeding from the pooper is not normal.
Get the scope and get to the bottom of this problem! Your hemoglobin is probably low from bleeding and I'm pretty sure you don't feel 100%
I was in the same boat as you a few years ago and kept putting it off and what a dumb and painful mistake that was.
My first colonoscopy I told the doctor I wanted to watch so I was awake but numbed up pretty good. I'm glad I did because I got to see my tumor. My second one I was totally out.
It's an easy procedure except for the preparation. One day of being uncomfortable is a small price to pay to feel good and have some piece of mind knowing what going on.

thanks all for the answers once again.

since I saw the docs and the rectal examination, the bleeding has been non-stop..the doc said he is hv 80-90 % certain it is piles..but wanted scope anyway...
he may well wanted to do it, so that he can charge me more....lol..

i think it bleeds when I stress out..given bleeding can be for piles as well as cancerrous, is there a way to differentiate without scope ?
