ASCO Vit D slows cancer progression

Postby radnyc » Sun Jun 11, 2017 10:57 am

As many have suggested for years: Vit D supplementation could be part of cancer treatment. But dosage needs to be adequate, forget about the "official" recommendation of 400 IU/day therapeutic doses need to be in the 4000 to 8000 IU/day range. And it needs to Vit D3 not D2, its weaker variant.

Says that didn't have effects on adenomas but I thought most colon cancers are adenocarcinoma ? Interesting study non the less!

Just to clarify :
adenoma = benign tumors
adenocarcinoma = malignant tumors = CRC which is what we have.

Oh!! Thank you, I didn't realize that. I thought it was a shortened version of the word. Time to up my vit D. Taking 800 ui daily but sounds like more is better.

Yes, but to a point. I wouldn't go over the levels that this study has stated. Too much vitamin D3 in the blood CAN cause elevated calcium levels which, in turn, can cause serious kidney problems. My point.....IF you are going to up your vitamin D3 level to the highest in the study (8000IU/day) then PLEASE get followed up by a doctor who can monitor your blood levels for potential problems.

Also, keep in mind that this study was done on stage IV patients who likely were having all of their blood levels monitored fairly regularly.

Just going to chime in here :) , my onc has diligently followed my vitamin D levels since diagnosis. Every 3 months, he checks it, with the rest of the blood work. If I don't supplement, my levels are below the guidelines. I actually have to go with 5000 iu of Vitamin D3 to stay in line. I'm planning on discussing this new info with him at my next appointment later this month. So far, he is of the mind that there is a correlation between low it D levels and CRC patients, butt no causation. He is certainly one to keep up with new info, so I'll let you know what he says.

Best Wishes,

For the newbie CRC patients and especially pre-surgery, why fool around with small steps?
sepis and 30 day OS [controls vs 200,000 iu vs 400,000 iu vitamin D3]

Here we may get a double whammy with megavitamin D3 with rapid initial loading - for the surgery, and immune function stimulation with a LEF+DIY immune cocktail for the cancer itself.

My wife had over 400,000 iu of vit D3 before her first surgery, and millions of iu by her second surgery a year later, along with the other supplements. She was not in prime condition for surgery at diagnosis, already down 2 notches. By conventional reckoning, she was considered inoperable for her second surgery, perhaps even more so afterwards (then "futility" on para aortic conglomerated clusters).

Slows CRC progression? In conjunction with metronomic chemo and other necessary immune adjuncts, really high dose D (cf Dr JJ Prendergast) may have helped shrink and dissolve some liver mets for us in the second year when she reached her highest levels. Our radiologist still marvels over this. Ditto for the peritoneal mets before first surgery.

In this war, success and survival need every advantage possible.
watchful, active researcher and caregiver for stage IVb/c CC. surgeries 4/10 sigmoid etc & 5/11 para-aortic LN cluster; 8 yrs immuno-Chemo for mCRC; now no chemo
most of 2010 Life Extension recommendations and possibilities + more, some (much) higher, peaking ~2011-12, taper chemo to almost nothing mid 2018, IV C-->2021. Now supplements

nominally Prendergast spoke of a peak ca 1200 ng/mL of 25 hydroxyvitamin D for 50,000 iu per day. But calcium control, below the upper limit, is probably easier to monitor frequently. Vitamin K2 and magnesium supplements were considered important, too.
