Postby effie26 » Mon May 29, 2017 6:28 am

my mum had her surgery 2 weeks ago she had the left side of bowel removed and most of the rectum, post op her bladder wasnt emptying properly so she had to come home with a catheter for 4 weeks.Doctor said its something that often happens when they go down so far due to bruising of the bladder.Has anybody experianced this? :? :? :?

Not quite, I did not need a catheter, butt I could not tell if I had to go to pee or not. It was a weird feeling. I made a point of going to the bathroom every 4 hours just to be safe. Also got in the habit of going once during the night.

I can't remember how long it took, butt it did clear up.

After my entire large intestine was removed I couldnt urinate for a couple months. Rather than send me home with a catheter I had to do the in and out method every few hours. They wanted my bladder and ureters to wake up and not get lazy with the catheter. It took time, but eventually I started to urinate on my own and build up to fully emptying.
It happened after my hipec too but was much briefer.

Hi Effie,
I was a bit older than your mum when I had a ULAR for rectal cancer. I had a catheter in for about 4 days post op but even after it was removed i had difficulty urinating. Just a tip for your mum once the catheter is removed. Rocking back and forth whilst sitting on the loo seems to help start the flow. Bowel and bladder are so closely aligned that handling of one impacts the other. It took me about 6 weeks post op before I could urinate again with ease. Hope everything goes well for you and your mum.

I had trouble urinating for a few months after my ULAR. I had a catheter in for about 12 hours after the resection and for about 24 hours after the ileostomy take down. I got a UTI about 2 weeks after each surgery. I'm not prone to UTI's so my guess (and my doctor's) is that it was related to the manipulation and effects of surgery including the catheter. Totally agree that the rocking and repositioning help with urination.
