What supplements do you take????

Postby wesixcooks » Sat May 27, 2017 12:44 am

I'm taking several different B vitamins. I was deficient in many of these before my diagnosis. I take Vitamin D, zinc picolinate, and magnesium glycinate. Specifically cancer related, I take oral capsules of frankincense, and turmeric. I also apply frankincense, myrrh, turmeric and orange essential oils topically. I take my probiotic, trace minerals and colloidal vitamin C when I remember, because they are all in the fridge.

This is all in addition to mainstream therapy. And I've been a BSN for 19 years, so I actually painstakingly researched each product before ordering and beginning it. (So I can point to actual studies, although with the essential oils, they may only be rats!) Oh, I don't sell oils, in case you were wondering.

I've also started walking daily and eating even more veggies, although I was pretty healthy before. I wasn't active, though. I felt too bad.

So, what supplements are you all taking?

Bachelor's of Science in Nursing. I worked as an RN, BSN, for 14 years, until I was too sick.

When I noticed my husband getting very sick this past fall, I started giving him kyolic garlic, omega 3s (DHA and EPA), curcumin 95, grape seed extract, vitamin D, magnesium malate, coenzyme Q10, zinc with carnosine (though I discontinued that when we found out he was severely anemic because zinc can interfere with iron absorption, and now just giving him carnosine while we work on his red blood cells), in addition to his usual Men's Total Health multivitamin (which is excellent).

When he was diagnosed and decided to have surgery, I discontinued the kyolic garlic, omega 3s (DHA and EPA), curcumin 95, and grape seed extract. I will be adding back in kyolic garlic, omega 3s (DHA and EPA), and curcumin 95 in a couple of weeks which will be three weeks post-op. Since curcumin has been shown to be 3x more effective than chemo, we will be tripling his dosage.

I may also add graviola but I need to do a bit more studying on that first.

Several years back, well before my diagnosis, my PCP had me start taking B12 and fish oil. I added in CoQ10 not long after she put me on a statin. Last year we found out I was vitamin D deficient, so after a round of prescription vitamin D I started taking it OTC. As a result of my rectal tumor's bleeding I became severely anemic, so my oncologist had me start on iron and vitamin C twice a day in March. Just a couple of days ago I started melatonin to try to help with my sleep. I was talking with my oncologist's PA and one of the cancer center's pharmacists and the pharmacist recommended it since I didn't want to take a sleeping pill.

Maybe I'm a natural skeptic, but I'm a little suspicious of this claim. Do not have a link to a clinical trial where this was studied?

maybe the curcumin is 3x more effective than chemo for reducing inflammation? I know there are a lot of studies on curcumin reducing inflammation.

getting serum levels high enough for therapeutic benefits seems to be problem. Especially if the curcumin is taken orally.

I don't see peanut's posts, but I saw a quote in this thread with a request for a citation regarding curcumin. The following links reference the data.

Quotations from study...

This study reports for the first time that addition of curcumin to FOLFOX-based chemotherapy enhances efficacy in patient-derived CRLM cultures.
Greater pro-apoptotic and CSC targeting efficacy was observed for curcumin than for oxaliplatin and 5-FU in a small patient subset, warranting further investigation to determine factors that influence response to curcumin. For the first time, safety and tolerability for curcumin in combination with FOLFOX chemotherapy are reported. A randomised phase II study comparing participants receiving FOLFOX only with those receiving FOLFOX + curcumin is currently recruiting.

That's quite a bit different than stating that curcumin is 3 times more effective than chemo alone.

P.S. Jim,

I neglected to mention that anti-inflammatories are anti-cancerous, to over-generalize. The role of inflammation in cancer has been known since 1863, yet American conventional medicine has been barking up the wrong tree for much of this past century. Curcumin is one exceptional anti-inflammatory. (The same can be said about CBD.) [The use of tumeric in Asia and the use of cumin in South America might be one of the factors for low rates of cancer among anti-inflammatory food eating populations. Studies are currently underway to examine this.] Because curcumin is highly anti-inflammatory, it has anti-cancerous properties.

Hi mpbster/CV,
I know there are a LOT of research on Curcumin/Turmeric and it has been an interesting subject for me since long ago.
However when you post a statement like ".. curcumin has been shown to be 3x more effective than chemo, ..." my view is that it's very important to state the exact source. You posted 4 links as references, but what I can see None of them contains your statement !?!
And as member Peanut_8 wrote:

In trying to find from where You could have seen those words... ("Curcumin more effective than chemo") I found this article, titled Curcumin Beats Chemo for Reducing Colon Cancer Stem Cells
The article is highlighting an interesting graph from this Colon Cancer Stem Cell study From (2014)
Curcumin Suppresses Crosstalk between Colon Cancer Stem Cells and Stromal Fibroblasts in the Tumor Microenvironment: Potential Role of EMT
A quote from that study:
"These results demonstrate once more the potent chemosensitizing effect of curcumin on CRC, and to our knowledge show for the first time the modulating effect of curcumin on the crosstalk between the CRC/CSCs and the fibroblasts in the tumor microenvironment, creating an adequate climate for more effective chemotherapeutic action of 5-FU to specifically target chemoresistant colorectal stem cells."

This was of course a study on Cells and not a clinical study/trial on patients. Hopefully that will come in the future and show good results.

If you should find the exact source to your statement, Please post.

We started with the Life Extension list from 2010 of nutrients and off label cimetidine, used some dosages, reduced or greatly expanded others (e.g. IV vitamin C, vitamin D3).

600 mg - 1500 mg curcumin has been the range we aimed for daily use along with everything else, with varied continuity. For the best example of stand alone curcumin use I've seen is the MGUS precancerous condition preceeding myeloma, at 8 grams to 12 grams per day. I suspect mCRC requires many more adjuncts to address frank CRC.
watchful, active researcher and caregiver for stage IVb/c CC. surgeries 4/10 sigmoid etc & 5/11 para-aortic LN cluster; 8 yrs immuno-Chemo for mCRC; now no chemo
most of 2010 Life Extension recommendations and possibilities + more, some (much) higher, peaking ~2011-12, taper chemo to almost nothing mid 2018, IV C-->2021. Now supplements
