CT scan- MDA said ok; local onc has issue

Postby TXLiz » Mon May 22, 2017 10:45 am

I recently completed my 5 fu/ folfox and had follow up at MD Anderson. My onc there said I was good right now.

I came back to my local onc with all my info; he questioned my CT report and ordered at PET. I had the PET last week. My results are in and I am waiting for his call.

The issue: my liver. MDA said:

"The liver contains a hypervascular focus in segment 4 adjacent to the middle hepatic vein on image 96 series 3 which is felt most likely to represent a regenerative nodule or focal nodular hyperplasia. This measures approximately 1 cm."

My local onc was uncomfortable with that. He said it was written off and should be defined and said if it lights up here we go again.

I know MDA is considered top notch and I want to trust them, and my local onc is just being cautious- but caution should be priority.

Any opinions? Will update when I hear. Thanks all.

We also had all of our follow ups at MDA. I would be shocked if this amounts to anything. If there was even the littlest doubt about anything, they, MDA would of ordered a Pet immediately. I remember on one occasion, my husbands ct scan was completely clear, but his cea jumped up just a little, and the oncologist ordered a pet scan the same day just to be sure. Everything was fine. I'm sure everything will be fine. Is there a way that both of your oncologists could speak to one other on the phone. That may be helpful.

Thank you Deb! That's what my husband said, as well.

I truly can't imagine MDA would miss anything- but my brain is always paranoid.

My local onc knows I am twitchy and he knows I want to always be so crazy careful about every aspect of this disease. I and my esteemed colleague, Dr. Google, are always giving him a hard time.

Best wishes to you and your husband.

The thing you have going for you is "hypervascular." There are some primaries that can be associated with hypervascular lesions on the liver, but I do not believe colorectal is one of them. In general, colorectal shows up as "ring enhancement," not "hypervascular."

Get done whatever you need for peace of mind, however.

I did not go to MDA, although all my doctors that got me to NED, were professionals there. I switched oncs, as my Radiation oncologist, stated, perhaps my Medical oncologist, might be trying to overdo the treatment, and stick more money in his pocket. Your issue is, do you trust MDA, or go with your original oncologist on this . I would trust MDA, butt your decision is yours, as you know more about your circumstances . 8)
