91, Folfox Done, Now What?

Postby fordodo » Thu May 11, 2017 9:04 pm

I posted before about my 91 year old MIL completing a modified course of Folfox. She is stage IV. In the last two weeks following her treatments ending all of a sudden she is beyond WEAK. It came out of nowhere. So we are wondering if it is the cumulative effect of the chemo or perhaps not:(?

I am 40 and through round three and it's hit me haaaaard this last go around. I don't know enough to comment on your situation but FOLFOX can definitely strike and cause severe, prolonged fatigue.

I was 47 when I was going through chemo, FOLFOX, following surgery. Yes that last cycle hit me like ton of bricks. took a good 2 weeks to recover. I can just imagine what your 91 yr old MIL must be feeling like.

Hope it better for her real soon.

Your poor mother in law, what a trooper. I'm 32, and just had my 5th treatment yesterday. #2 made me very weak, I felt as though I hadn't eaten in days. 3 & 4 were even harder and left me so sick I couldn't lift my head out of bed to vomit. This time around we completely cut the oxali and went only with leucovorin, and the 5fu pump. I feel like a million bucks, well, maybe not that much. But I can actually live again and haven't needed any additional meds today at all.

On a different note, my very well respected surgeon told me about a study being released this June regarding the use of oxaliplatin and reducing the number of treatments with success. I look forward to this information.

Best of luck to your family. It's different for everyone, but the hardest part of my journey so far. Prayers.

I truly feel for your mother in law... treatment like this at 91 , wow! Just like the previous poster, my oncologist stopped the oxaliplatin after 4 treatments due to the side effects. I noticed a huge difference after the 5th treatment...less fatigue and little neuropathy.
You must let the oncologist know how weak she is because they can change doses and drugs to make treatment more easily tolerated.
I hope that things get easier as I can't imagine going through this at such an age. Give her lots if love to help her through this tough time. Just knowing that those around you understand and care is worth more than you can imagine.
My thoughts are with you and your mother in law.

I'd think it was expected. Like the others in this thread, I was young(37) and had to have the does of Oxyliplatin reduced after the 3rd round due to complete lack of energy and low WBC count.
