Ana, it's your body, your decision, your life. No one understands how you feel more than you do. I applaud you for thinking this through and making a decision based on your goals: freedom and quality of life. Your colleagues may mean well, but they should be supporting you, not second-guessing your decision. Try to stay calm in these last pre-surgery hours. Watch a movie. Go for a walk. Think about something that makes you happy. I'll be sending lots of prayers for a successful surgery and an easy recovery!

Dear Colonclubers,

I'm alive and kicking! Still in the ICU but I'm going up today to a normal bedroom station and will be able to see my daughter

Woken up with a light feeling of relief and not feeling the need to go to the loo. Just for that, I'm already loving my new bellyBUTTon

I've seen it, touched it, changed the pouch. I'm gonna rock this baby for sure!

I don't have a lot of pain because I have a epidural and the best Anesthesist in the world :D

Thank you so much for your positive energies! You really lifted me up

Keeping Strong!

Excellent news, Ana! When I had an ileostomy I named it "Bellybutt" so naming yours "bellyButton" is close! Aren't epidurals the best?! :D So glad to hear you're feeling good about your decision too. Keep up the good work and you'll be outta the Big House in no time!

The name of my stoma is "Button" - so named because it looks like a shirt sleeve button.

It's not unusual for people to assign a name to their stoma. Over the months ahead, you will be looking at your stoma when changing the ostomy pouch and durIng daily skin care. It makes sense to give this newly located segment of intestine a name so that you can mentally and physically refer to it. Naming a stoma also adds to a lighter mood and levity when there is a stoma mishap (an erupting stoma spray liquid poo, a leaking ostomy wafer). Humor is a valuable resource.

Welcome to your stoma, BellyBUTTon.
