Question regarding water absorbtion after rt hemi

Postby Toni1106 » Wed Apr 26, 2017 3:13 pm

Hi everyone - I'm new to the site and had a question regarding water absorption after a right hemi. I am eight years post-op from a right hemi due to a severe intussusception. I had the terminal ileum, appendix, cecum and right colon removed. It measured out as 39 cm of cecum and right colon and 15 cm of terminal ileum.

Ever since my surgery I seem to have issues with moderate-severe (at times) dehydration. Can anyone help me understand if my surgery may be causing an inability for me to absorb water/fluids at a normal level or should I be thinking away from that. My sodium and calcium have started to become low post surgery as well. My gastro doc isn't my most favorite as he seems to brush off many of my questions as silly. I've researched so much on the internet but I get conflicting reports.

Any replies would be appreciated!

Thanks :)

Hi Toni1106,

My understanding is that the colon is significantly responsible for absorption of water into the body. Hence, the more large intestine you have the more water your body can absorb. However, your body can still absorb sufficient water. However, if your stools are mostly watery then the hemicolectomy is probably a significant cause of your dehydration.

Hi Toni. I had an extended rt hemicolectomy and my stools have been loose and/or watery since surgery, 41 months ago. I take a teaspoon of Konsyl D each day but can't say that it makes much difference. I am told simply that 'that's the way it is now.' Also, 'at least you're getting rid of it now!' So....... Not much help, sorry. Best wishes.

My husband had 15 inches of his ascending colon removed along with his cecum, appendix and terminal ilium as well. He has had issues with loose stools ever since (6 years now post surgery). He takes Imodium daily and that keeps things very close normal. He drinks much more water than he use to before surgery. If you don't have problems with loose stools, than I'm not sure why you have issues with dehydration? If you do have issues with loose stools, then that may at least be contributing to the problem. My husband also quit drinks or foods that contain diuretics, caffeine ect. which can contribute to dehydration.
