I am glad to hear your good news.
And my oncologist suggested the same thing to me, a colonoscopy in three years. This was after I had a colonoscopy at one year post surgery and they found three new polyps had developed in a year. The first colonoscopy i had a 44 revealed 3 polyps and the cancerous tumor. The oncologist would not budge on the three year wait. He said he checked standard of care guidelines, that the guidelines recommended a colonoscopy three years after the one year post resection colonoscopy, and that the insurance companies use these guidelines in making their decision to cover procedures. He said the benefit of having a colonoscopy sooner than three years would not outweigh the risk of having the colonoscopy itself.
I looked at the National Comprehensive Cancer Network, NCCN, guidelines. The NCCN recommends a colonoscopy one year after resection. Repeat colonoscopy typically recommended at 3 years, and then every 5 years, unless follow up colonoscopy indicates advanced adenoma, villous polyp, polyp greater than 1 centimeter or high grade dysplasia. In which case colonoscopy every year. More frequent colonoscopies may be indicated in patients who present with colon cancer before 50 years of age.
I didnt argue with the oncologist, but I am going to see my gastroenterologist and request to have a colonoscopy in 9/17, two years after my last one. And if my gastroenterologist declines my request, I will look for another gastroenterologist.
