Stage 1 colon cancer/Oncologist?

Postby pdd » Thu Mar 23, 2017 9:24 am

Hi,

After my husband's LAR surgery, the pathology came out as Stage 1 which did not spread to lymph nodes. But why did the surgeon refer my husband to oncologist? Is this usual process?

Thanks for your help in advance. God bless you all!

An oncologist would probably be the best type of doctor to do regular follow-ups with your husband. 8)
MSS, KRAS Wild NRAS Mutated
9/2012 CRC IIB Lft Colectomy 0 lymph nodes 0 Chemo
10/2013 CT clear
11/15 CEA 2.7 to 4.6
11/15 Spread to uterus. Hysterectomy
2/16 Pelvic radiation 25, brachytherapy 3
4/16 - 6/16 Xeloda
6/16 CT Several lung nodules 5 mm
8/16 CT Nodules still present. Most stable. Some growth
11/16 Transfer to UCSD Moores
12/16 Folfox + Avastin failed
2/17 Folfiri + Erbitux
8/17 5FU+Erbitux No 5FU bolus
7/18 Spread to vagina
6/18 Folfiri + Avastin + Trametinib
6/18 CEA dropping

Not sure about the follow-up procedures for stage 1, but as a stage 2 patient, I get blood work done every 3 months. They check CEA, liver function, iron levels etc. I had a CT scan after completion of adjuvant chemo, and also a colonoscopy at the first year anniversary of diagnosis.

Best Wishes,

Depending on the cancer center, most Stage I go directly in surveillance. This means no chemo, but quarterly checkups with blood work, and yearly CT scans for 3 years. Colonoscopy at 1 year. After that, checkups and blood work go to every 6 months until year 5. This is the protocol for MD Anderson.

Hi,

My husband was stage one and we requested to see an oncologist, firstly to be absolutely certain he did not need chemotherapy but once we got to see him, he was able to give a lots good advice about simple strategies to reduce risk of recurrence including daily exercise, taking aspirin and generally avoiding a high stress lifestyle. Surgeons are often extremely focused on the operation itself and its good to get another perspective. Oncologists can also provide good advice regarding the most appropriate surveillance for you and if its something you want to know about it details, prognosis.

Good luck and glad you got such positive pathology results.

Thank you so much everyone! Your responses really helped me to extent. Oncologist appointment went well. No chemo! Just quarterly lab tests for 2 years and then 6 months for next 3 years. Just keep looking after my husbands health. Eat healthy and exercise!
God bless you all!
