Yes I too am grateful to be alive, butt I do carry side effects. IF you have not done so already, find an exercise you like and keep with it. Me, I power walk, have been for 12+ years now. Truly believe it keeps some of those nasty side effects at bay.

I was diagnosed with a blood clot in (I believe) my right leg/hip area 3 years following my radiation treatments. Popped up suddenly in another surgery. The good news I was power walking prior to that surgery & I was slowing walking after that surgery. Only my PCP knows which leg it is in today, it does not hold me back today, yet it is 100% blocked. Per a specialized that my PCP had me see, I was lucky, most people do not achieve what I did. And he agrees, it probably was radiation damage, butt because I was walking prior to that surgery, my body was already side stepping that clot that was forming.

I also believe that walking as kept a lot of pains at bay. So find something you enjoy and stick with it.

Ah Chemo.... The gift that keeps on giving.

Do a websearch for each concern and use FOLFOX or 5FU as a key word.

I was having pain in my feet, ankles now up to my thighs if something light touches them. Did a search and found a study on FOLFOX causing tactile allodynia. I've lost 3 molars that cracked horizontally and had to be cut out. Chronic constipation that I fight daily. Wobbly legs. Dry eyes which can cause some icky vision when they're too dry. Tire easily and nap every day. I gained weight during chemo and tho I'm now only 10 lbs over my best weight for my age and body shape, 3 days a week at the gym and a strict healthy diet hasn't helped me lose it.

I don't have the bone pain but had colon vs rectal so no radiation.

This August will be 8 years since I ended chemo!
Stage III cc surgery 1/7/09. 12 tx FOLFOX
Stage IV PET = 1.5cm liver met. HR 4/11/12

14 years since dx and 11 years post liver resection.
Pronounced CURED and discharged by onc

Angie - you are not alone. I just turned 45, was diagnosed @ 40 with rectal cancer and the side effects of treatment + surgery are always present. Hips & ass (meaning gluts & tailbone area) are a mess - thank you radiation. Feet are an issue = neuropothy - thanks chemo, and surgery effects, while most of the time now are fine with using Metamucil daily, can still be a problem.

Honestly my feet and the muscular/hip issues are the most frustrating at this point. I have zero flexibility and I almost feel like the bottom vertebra of my spine are fused because I now have problems in my lower back, it hurts so bad just from standing or walking, I'm positive that's from radiation too.

The worst part is the docs look at you like you're nuts. I know it has to be because on the whole, most of their patients are older and already have the aches and pains so they don't complain and/or notice as much as when people our age come through, people that have active lifestyles and don't have existing arthritis or aches & pains.

Just my 2 cents.

My Onc has been pretty much blaming everything I mention on treatment, so at least I don't feel crazy. On my last spoontmemnt, I told him I had this new pain in my abdomen that felt like a Charlie horse if I moved the wrong way. He said it was probably from scar tissue from radiation. I said, "Three years later?" He said, yes. Chemo and radiation continue to affect your body years after treaement. Oh, yay.

Yes, now that I think about it, it does make a difference in certain contexts to have the links to other ColonTalk pages start with https.

Thanks for the tip. Very valuable insight!

I'll have to do further research now to see just how the encryption works when you click on various types of links.
