Hit more than one time on my E-Mail

Postby justin case » Tue Mar 21, 2017 6:19 pm

It is probably better I not be around the forum, although many have been very gracious forwarding their information. 8) On more than one occasion, while offering help, my E-mail has been attacked! Thank you all for your help, as I have no new information to give you, I shall exit. Please know many have helped me get through countless problems, and this is a very good sight for those who need information !

I hope this isn't true. You do give information and more importantly, you make members smile and laugh. I would miss you a lot if you stopped posting.

What do you mean by your email was attacked?

On one occasion, I downloaded a picture, and immediately my google account started loading ! As I never use my goggle account, I thought it suspicious. On another occasion , I responded to a what I thought was a friend, and got endless reports of invasion into my Yahoo account !

Yahoo has had two major security breaches since about 2013? ish. I think most account holders would have received many notices to secure and re-secure the accounts and passwords.

Never had an issue with GMail ... so far, BUTT I just assume that free online services will be hacked at some point to some degree.
One reason I never went back to FBook is their tracking and security issues. WHO knows WHAT who knows ?

As an aside here on CTalk : if any member feels their account has been compromised or they are receiving concerning PMs or emails
supposedly from CTalk member accounts, PLEASE send your concerns to < forum@colonclub.com >and some Mods / Admins / BODs can take a look.

Yes, my hot mail was hacked a few years ago & recently Yahoo has had major issues. A friend who owns a business changed over from yahoo to gmail a few months ago because of this. Once your email is hacked, it's hacked. Best to change the password occasionally & keep all passwords different on everything. Just be careful opening emails from friends that don't look like the usual format your friends use, i.e. subject, salutation etc. I can usually tell & don't open the email or if I do, don't lick on anything or respond to it.

Recently I began getting messages @ login that this website is not secure & that message occurs every time I login here. I think it is due to updates in the search engine for additional security??

Agree re: FB & therefore, my son won't use it.

I regularly get all sorts of weird junk emails from canadianpharmacy for viagra & cialis & as much as I block, they come back. Also continual flood of FedEx saying they have messages & need info of which I hit the report button. I do delete temporary internet files & cookies each day @ logoff, but if you have any kind of an online presence, I don't think these things are unavoidable.

Fun, ain't it?!

Hey .. maybe it is your ghost ....

That text box relates to SSL issues with logins.
I use a "Locked and Loaded" version of Firefox with lotsa' anti-bad-stuff add-ons and just started getting that warning when the prior forum move was done... due to a new add-on I installed.

Basically if you take your tablet to Starbucks for a coffee and surf their free WiFi .... you have more potential for problems than logging in here.
IF I were disclosing the nuclear launch codes ... I would NOT log in ... BUTT for reporting how my blood tests went = I am good.
At some point, any info we send into cyberspace is NOT secure and somebody with malicious intent and the right tools can hack it = guaranteed.

Using a VPN and secure proxies can help. Using encrypted services is a great step ... BUTT not all services are encrypted. Firefox has a new addon which allows you to force secure connections IF they are available and not being enforced. Problem is, many sites do not offer secure connections ( https: versus http: )
Getting back to Michael's point above : I always use https://encrypted.google.com/ when I use Google for a search engine and still run it thru the Firefox anti-bad-stuff and a couple of other things ....

Nothing is perfect and life goes ON !

Cheers

Secure, encrypted sessions for ColonTalk.

Postby Jacques » Wed Mar 22, 2017 9:19 am

CRguy wrote:... Problem is, many sites do not offer secure connections ( https: versus http: )

I think that the ColonTalk website does indeed offer secure connections ( https: ), but this is not the default option. If you want to always have a secure connection while using ColonTalk, then I think you can force the ( https: ) connection by using the following steps:

Step 1. Force an https: secure, encrypted session of ColonTalk. To force ColonTalk to use its encrypted, secure channel, you can enter the https: version of the URL in your browser. To do this, launch an ordinary, default session of ColonTalk and then go to the address bar of your browser and edit the ColonTalk URL so that it starts with https: instead of http: . After you have completed the edit of the URL in the address bar, refresh your browser by using the refresh icon or the menu option for Refresh. This should put you in a secure, encrypted session with ColonTalk. Depending on the browser, there should probably now be a locked padlock icon just to the left of the revised URL, confirming that the session is now encrypted.

Step 2. Create a bookmark for your secure, encrypted ColonTalk sessions. Once you are in the secure, encrypted session as outlined in Step 1 above, then you can create a bookmark for this by clicking on the browser's bookmark icon or the bookmark option on the browser's menu bar. Alternatively, you may be able to create a bookmark by using the shortcut key, Ctrl-D.

Step 3. Use the secure, encrypted bookmark for accessing ColonTalk. Once you have created the secure, encrypted bookmark, then you can use this bookmark each time you want to access ColonTalk. This will encrypt your session, including the username and password that you enter in order to log in.

The above steps will enable encrypted sessions within ColonTalk, but this will not solve the Starbucks problem or the access of your account via an open, unsecured WiFi connection. As CRguy has mentioned, that level of security would most likely require the use of VPN (Virtual Private Network) software and a secure proxy server. Most free WiFi sites only offer open, unsecured connections, which are risky and can compromise your data.

Thanks Jacques, that is excellent input for members here !

The issue as I see it so far is with the Firefox add-on Enforce Encryption showing CTalk pages as mixed content :
where I still get the grey lock / orange triangle with my browser.
: A grey lock with an orange triangle indicates that Firefox is not blocking insecure passive content. Attackers may be able to manipulate parts of the page, for example, by displaying misleading or inappropriate content, but they shouldn’t be able to steal your personal data from the site.

Firefox is not blocking passive insecure content on mixed pages and while I would NOT unblock insecure content, I still see mixed content getting through.

Mind you I also have a few other things loaded as add-ons, so while I am not concerned about malicious attacks I still "enforce" the secure connection wherever possible. More testing to be done !

This IS the internet, SO

I did notice that CR as it mentioned "some images" as not secure. I figured partial was better than nothing?? Good detective work!

You've got us going in the right direction here Michael! :)
