PET scan results

Postby thubler » Sun Feb 26, 2017 10:05 pm

So I got my PET scan results back the same day. I had two enlarged lymph nodes in my mesentery. One measured 12mm x 11mm and the other was inferior at 9mm. Both had SUV. The larger had SUV of 1.1 and the smaller was 1.6 SUV. Both had "little if any metabolic activity" per the report. My Oncologist sends me an email basically saying the lymph nodes are "most likely benign" and he wanted to rescan in three months. Great news as far as I was concerned, 3 months of not thinking about cancer every minute. My family has a big vacation planned and I was just promoted at work so three months would have gotten me past that and I would have been able to really enjoy myself. So fast forward a week and I had an ultrasound on my gallbladder for some unrelated issues. My oncologist emails me and tells me that he presented my case to the cancer board and he now wants to order a CT guided biopsy. He is unsure if its even possible per the radiologist. Talk about the wind getting knocked out of my sails. I was so excited about the results and now am worried and frustrated. I had one week of not constantly worrying. I wish my oncologist would have told me a week ago that he wanted a biopsy instead of being so optimistic and giving me a false sence of reassurance. Throughout Chemo I just wanted that break, however short to have no evidence of disease but havent got there yet. Just so pissed right now. I pray this isnt cancer. I just finished chemo in November and cant imagine going back on it or going back to light duty at work (Im a police sergeant in 10 days). Well Im sitting in the parking lot of my gym at 10 pm. Im going to go in and beat the crap out of myself (physically not literally) now its how I deal with it.

They could just be being cautious. That's not high enough for it to definitely be cancer, so it could still just be inflammation.

I hate it when doctors do that kind of stuff. :x

I'd be frustrated too. That's what sucks about this F'd up disease, one minute you think you're free and clear then BAM something else. The SUV are low, so as said before it might be nothing and the oncologist is being safe rather than sorry. Good Luck!

I just got back with my meeting with my oncologist. He doesn't seem concerned and stated its a very small chance of it being cancer but he is being cautious. He is unsure if they will even do the biopsy because its in a tough location for a needle biopsy and he isn't entertaining having it removed at this point. I am going to push the biopsy back to mid April or May because of my hectic schedule, maybe I will just do a scan first we shall see. He showed me the PET and the node didnt light up at all and sidnt really take up the dye. So I guess I feel better about it. He did agree that worst case scenario if I need to go back on chemo he will agree to the oral 5fu and wont make me go on light duty at work. This cancer is definitely an emotional rollar coaster!

Interesting you mention this, because it's a land of confusion for me with lung mets.

Mine are all so small that the onc isn't sure what they are, in light of pneumonia, he says. The radiologist is certain they are cancer.
DX Stage 4 2/16 with lung mets
4/16 CT, PET show "marked improvement" in size and number of lung mets, rectal tumor.
8/16 "Great report" from scans, lung mets continue to shrink in size and number, CEA 1.6, cancer "in remission" but surgeon believes tumor remains too large.
10/16 Xrays for constipation problems reveal tumor occupies 25 percent of rectal canal: Occupied 80 percent upon diagnosis 2/16
12/16 Back on Avastin; tumor can be removed, but need better margins.

So we watch them to see if they grow, and treat them as if they are cancer.
