New Smile

Postby BrownBagger » Tue Feb 21, 2017 12:24 pm

This is the other post of mine from the other day that went "poof" in the electronic realm. I'm rewriting it now because it's an example of me "putting my money where my mouth is, i.e., "act like you're going to live a long time, etc." (see my motto at the bottom of my sig.). Another motto I have is, "Win, lose or draw, I'm going to do it with a smile."

Thanks in part to the ravages of all the chemo I've had (dry mouth, enamel erosion, cough drops in the middle of the night, etc.) my dentist recommended that I get my front teeth crowned--15 of them for a cool $20,000. I could have limped to the finish line with the teeth I had, I think, but decided to spend the money. Plus, I can't take it with me, and I don't think my widow will miss it. This dentist is world class good, and I've learned though my cancer ordeal that it pays to find the best doctors at the best institutions. You'll live longer and be happier. And, as Dr. Kemeny said early on, "Don't neglect the rest of your health just because you have this problem." Pretty good advice. So I made the commitment and started saving my hard-earned cash. Despite delays caused by multiple surgeries (no anestheologist wants to deal with temp. crowns and other dental work that could come loose during surgery and choke the patient). But I finally got it done in December, so I can deduct it on this year's taxes. It's just more to pile on the fortune I spent traveling to and staying in NYC for medical treatment and consults over the past year. Hopefully there's a big tax refund in it for me.

This photo was taken at work after a pretty rough Fall, during which I almost died on the operating table, had 3 brachytherapy radiation treatments and two ribs removed. Still hanging in there and living my life pretty much the way I want, at least for the time being. Having new teeth is a nice bonus.

Anyway, here's how it looks. I got the bottoms done, too, but they don't appear in this selfie. You can see my patented messy desk, however.

Partial crowns. They're porcelain crowns, I believe, that wrap around the front and bottoms of the tooth, but keep the existing tooth structure in the back. My insurance wouldn't cover "veneers" but does cover "crowns," so I think it's a hybrid designed to keep the (minimal AFLAC) insurance in effect. My dentist does individual crowns while you wait (she has a fancy CAM-CAD machine that makes them in one sitting), but for this scale of job, she sends them out for the traditional crown treatment.
