Welcome to the forum! You will want to be sure that you have a board certified colorectal surgeon as they are the ones with the experience you need. Depending on what they know from the colonoscopy, he may need additional scans to learn more about the tumor. I had CT scans before meeting the surgeon.
I had a sigmoid colon tumor that required colon resection or colectomy. They cut out about 8 inches of colon and re-attached the ends. I spent about 3 days in hospital, limited pain, and was eating small meals of regular food in 3 days. Be sure to walk as soon as possible in the hospital, as that will help your bowels "wake up" after surgery. For about 2 weeks I had urgent and frequent, small poops but things got more normal in the following weeks. I was back to work part-time in 3 weeks and full time in 4.5 weeks, but I work a desk job. I am now 3 months out and can eat everything but large amounts of popcorn and bowel habits are a good, new normal.
Once the surgery is over, you will discuss the pathology report with your surgeon and/or oncologist. Based on what they found from the tumor and any surrounding lymph nodes, they will stage your husband's cancer and discuss whether or not he needs further treatment.
Best wishes! Laurie
