Creatinine and CEA/worried

Postby mtipte » Mon Jan 30, 2017 10:59 pm

Hello everybody,

Well as you know my mum is waiting for surgery and now after the last neoadjuvant chemo low doses xeloda maintenance she had some blood tests. Her CEA is within normal range (4,9) before It was higher. But the onc said the level of creatinine is high. (1,6 and normally it is from 0,3 to 1,3). She ordered more blook tests tomorrow in a diff lab.

I have been trying to find the cause of this rise and I came across some kidney failure or it might be due to high blood pressure too. Did any of you experience the same?
Thanks for your help.
Greetings from Peru.
Mario.

Perhaps she is Type 2 diabetic.
18% of former chemo patients are.
I was diagnosed as a T2 in 2011 with an A1C of 9.1. It now runs at 5.6-5.8 .Even so I have high creatinine levels and an eGFR of around 45 ( but stable).
I had diagnostic imaging and a kidney biopsy performed before my specialist concluded that the cause was diabetic not hypertension which was a surprise given my fairly good blood glucose levels.
He then asked how many rounds of chemo I had. Answer 12. I have never found any corroborating literature, but he advised that that amount of chemo took about 20% off my kidney function.

FYI: Dehydration can significantly raise creatinine. I fyou think mom might have been dehydrated, correct that and then ask for the test to be repeated.

Good luck.

Special considerations:
Drugs that can increase creatinine measurements include aminoglycosides (for example, gentamicin), Bactrim, cimetidine, heavy metal chemotherapeutic agents (for example, Cisplatin), and nephrotoxic drugs -- such as cephalosporins (for example, cefoxitin).

False high readings:
Tourniquets a. Application. The tourniquet should be applied approximately three to four inches above the venipuncture site. The tourniquet must be tight enough to increase the pressure in the veins, making them more accessible, but no so tight to result in hemoconcentration. b. Time. The tourniquet should not be left on the arm longer than one minute. 1) A good rule of thumb to determine the one-minute tourniquet time is to remove the tourniquet when blood starts to flow into the first tube of blood being drawn. 2) Prolonged tourniquet application can cause hemoconcentration of blood at the puncture site, which can lead to a false increase in various chemistry analytes.
