My dads journey is over

Postby canadiandaughter » Tue Jan 17, 2017 8:29 pm

On January 8th, my father passed with with his family by his side. We were able to keep him at home until the 5th, so we feel we honored his wish to stay home as long as possible. Dad got a nasty bladder infection a few months ago which started his rapid decline. He spent a week in hospital until his legs started working again then was home for two days then back in for another week as he was retaining fluids. His oncologist could not believe how bad he had gotten so fast, so sent him for more tests. A very small tumor was found in his brain and another on his spine. They gave him one radiation on the spine one and 5 on the brain. We set up a schedule and made sure someone was always with him and mom so that we could keep him at home. We could see he was very slowly declining, but he never complained. He only took extra strength tylenol four times a day to manage his pain. On December 30th, we had a family gathering for Christmas. He managed to stay there for 3 hours using a wheel chair. We also got him some morphine pills for that day and he only took one. On the 3rd of January he saw his two great grandkids that he had not seen at the other gathering. He spent two days with them at home before we ended up taking him to the hospital to await a hospice bed on the 5th. After that he declined very rapidly. It was like he chose his time and place. He never had any issues from the cancer in his liver or lungs right up until the end. He was only getting 2.5 mg of morphine every 3 hours. We were all very thankful for that. I want to thank all of those on this board that have been supportive since I came here almost 2.5 years ago when dad was diagnosed. We all feel truly blessed that we were given an extra 2 years because he chose to take chemo. RIP to my dad of steel as one doctor so called him just two weeks ago!

CD, You joined the board about 3 wks before me; we are friends & I know your story. You were a wonderful advocate, support for your dad & your mom during his cancer dx. Not an easy role, especially living a few hours away, traveling to attend what appts. you could, choreographer of family support etc. to meet the needs &/or emergencies @ hand. Just a really tough, stressful job powered through love & compassion. You must have some of your dad's steel in you. You have honored your dad throughout his dx, will continue to honor him through the memories you have, the ones you created & through continued support of your mother through this most difficult time for you & your family.

I think the blessings went both ways, My Friend.
Sending my heartfelt sympathies to you, your mom & family during your time of grief.

Big Hugs

I'm so truly sorry, CD. I do remember even your first post, I remember how you hear all the points of view here, the different experiences, and you chose the best course of action for your dad. It certainly was... look how much life he had, and what wonderful experiences even until the final days. Your dad of steel is always with you.
Sending you a long hug over the distance...
