Constipation.....

Postby beck1965 » Sun Jan 01, 2017 9:46 pm

Hi folks. I'm on antibiotics for a sinus infection and now I have A good case of constipation. With my recent colon cancer diagnosis, I'm unsure if what to take to help things along. Any suggestions? Either over the counter, natural or food related. Thanks so much.

Miralax works very well, and my tip - mix it into warm liquids instead of cold. It blends better. I usually take a dose in the morning and it works within a few hours. If I feel like it isn't working (I have gotten to know my GI system pretty well through this) I will take another dose.

Other than that I use soluble fiber pills (I can't do the powdered fiber I have texture issues).

I would think since your diagnosis is recent you would want to go the more gentle route. I have never had cramping or gas issues with either product.

Sorry you have had to find your way here but glad you found us. There is a wealth of knowledge and information to be found from the members here.

I will add you to my prayer list.

I agree with the miralax (in my coffee every morning) and fiber. I also take Philips magnesium caplets, 4 ever evening, and drink plenty of fluids

My mum got better eating watermellon, plum and almonds' milk.

The doc prescribed some laxatives, but she had terrible stomach aches.

Cheers.

I hope you are better now, but I preach The Purple Bomb to all who listen.

    2-4 oz prune juice
    1 dose Milk of Magnesia
top off with ginger ale or sprite

For basic maintenance, find you some of these (actually delish) prunes: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Sunsweet-One ... z/16555435

Good luck!

I take a stool softener (Colace generic) morning and night. If I don't, I get very constipated. I'm afraid of long term use of laxatives because of Ron50's destruction of his kidneys due to his doctor's advice for constipation many years ago.

If I eat too much fiber to try and undo my constipation, I end up pooping out a ping pong ball. I learned not to over do fiber. That's something that has to be upped gradually or you can make things worse before they get better.

Prunes followed by a cup of coffee or tea in the morning? Also, try Colace, morning and evening if you are super constipated?

This is what I do as well, as it's essential to manage pain - I have a rectal tumor.
DX Stage 4 2/16 with lung mets
4/16 CT, PET show "marked improvement" in size and number of lung mets, rectal tumor.
8/16 "Great report" from scans, lung mets continue to shrink in size and number, CEA 1.6, cancer "in remission" but surgeon believes tumor remains too large.
10/16 Xrays for constipation problems reveal tumor occupies 25 percent of rectal canal: Occupied 80 percent upon diagnosis 2/16
12/16 Back on Avastin; tumor can be removed, but need better margins.

Fig Newtons are great with hot coffee, too. I'd stopped eating them because I'd gained weight (10 lbs and I was already 10 lbs overweight) but think I'm going to add them back into my morning routine.

Yep, Colace is awesome. I'd stopped taking it daily because I was passing gas during exercise class 3 days a week. Then I got constipated again so 3 days on Colace fixed me right up. Back to daily. I had a colonoscopy in August and everything was 'perfect'.
