Scope Wars in South Australia

Postby Maggie Nell » Wed Jul 19, 2017 11:28 pm

A turf war has erupted between South Australia's doctors and nurses, who are starkly at odds over a
proposal to reduce the number of patients having to wait for colonoscopies.

Earlier this year, the State Government announced nurses would be trained to perform
the procedure, under the supervision of specialist doctors, on patients deemed at
low-risk of bowel cancer.

Simple drug regimen could help prevent cancer recurrence, Israeli study says

For the study, 38 breast cancer patients at Sheba Medical Center, Kaplan Medical Center and Rabin Medical Center were given a pharmacological treatment — Deralin (used to reduce blood pressure and anxiety) and Etopan (used to reduce inflammation) — five days before their surgeries, the day of their surgeries and five days after their surgeries.

...

“We found that the drugs were very efficient in reducing biomarkers of metastatic processes,” Ben-Eliyahu said. “For example, we found that the drug treatment reverses EMT — the process that tumor cells go through to slip out of the primary tumor and enter another organ. It is a crucially important step in the metastatic process. We also looked at indices related to the immune system and were able to improve immune competence and reduce inflammation with the drugs.”

”Of all family caregivers, spousal caregivers are the last ones to recognize that they actually are doing caregiving. They can go on an incredibly long time picking up the pieces of the household tasks: cleaning, cooking, finances, shopping, as well as helping the ill partner in bouts of illness, or taking them to and from doctor’s appointments and hospital visits… and all this while holding down a full-time job, and sometimes moonlighting at another one as well to keep the finances from totally dwindling. But no, they don’t even consider they are caregivers. They are doing it out of love or duty, and somewhere along the line they lose themselves, and become absorbed by the battle against their spouse’s illness. This is the Superman complex and inevitably, it leads to a crisis point and burnout or even breakdown for the caregiver.” (Anderson, 2009).

...Plus, alcohol can also lead to the development of polyps in the colon, Pochapin says, and it increases the risk that you'll develop polyps, which are benign growths that have the potential to turn into colorectal cancer...

Some survivors experience profound insecurity because they don't trust their body — they think it will let them down again, and worse still, the cancer will return.
People often tell survivors that they are "strong", "brave" and "inspirational". But these words can jar with someone who feels they had no choice but to deal with it.
Still, facing the fall-out of their cancer for years afterwards does forge a new kind of strength for many.

The end of treatment is just a stage in a long journey and it may bring up uncomfortable things they need permission to think about, feel, and explore.
For Serena, her online group gave her a safe space to process her cancer experience — and move towards recovery

DFCI: Cell cycle-blocking drugs can shrink tumors by enlisting immune system in attack on cancer, study finds

New research by scientists at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (Dana-Farber) and Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH) reveals an unexpected mechanism behind these tumor regressions. In a study published online today by the journal Nature, the investigators show that CDK4/6 inhibitors not only stymie the division of cancer cells but can also spur the immune system to attack and kill the cells. When the drugs were coupled with other immunotherapy agents, the anti-cancer effect can be even greater, they report.

The clinical trials were on breast cancer but it might be applicable to CRC too.
