Xeloda and cardiotoxicity

Postby CoyoteVB » Sat Dec 24, 2016 2:34 am

I am a new member of the club. I have been reading many posts. Thanks for the wealth of information. I started having soreness in my left arm and chest while excercising shortly after starting Xeloda. My oncologist had me take a stress test which resulted in a trip to the ER and an angiogram. The good news is there are non blockages. The bad news is Xeloda and 5FU may be cardio toxic to me. I am hoping just a minor speed bump on my journey. My oncologist is on top of it but I would be interested in hearing from anyone else who has had a similar experience.

I've had a number of electrocardiograms in the 6+ years since I finished Xeloda treatment, and results are always OK. I have less energy since completing treatment, but I guess this may be due to ageing. The only residual symptom I still have, is discoloration of the skin on one foot.
Stage 3 R/C -1 node+ ( 7/09)
5 wks radiation, 2 wks chemo: 5FU (8-9/09)

Supplements: Aspirin, Calcium, Vit. D3

Interesting you mention this.

I have had a couple of elevated heart rate episodes with the generic Xeloda - 145-155 at rest.

However, the rate comes right down and is always normal when I go to the doc about it.
DX Stage 4 2/16 with lung mets
4/16 CT, PET show "marked improvement" in size and number of lung mets, rectal tumor.
8/16 "Great report" from scans, lung mets continue to shrink in size and number, CEA 1.6, cancer "in remission" but surgeon believes tumor remains too large.
10/16 Xrays for constipation problems reveal tumor occupies 25 percent of rectal canal: Occupied 80 percent upon diagnosis 2/16
12/16 Back on Avastin; tumor can be removed, but need better margins.

I did not have an elevated heart rate but there were abnormal P and T waves on the EKG.

I have never taken xeloda but after my second infusion of 5-fu I was sent from the Dr's office to the ER where I was diagnosed with pericarditis. I was experiencing sharp pains in my chest that went through to my back.

My heart rate is always slightly elevated so it really isn't a good indicator for me.
