Port Removal

Postby Fluff Bottom » Tue Nov 22, 2016 3:32 pm

I'm planning on getting my port out next week and was told by the surgeon's office that they can take it out in the office. Is this how most of you had yours removed? They had some trouble putting it in but I know removal should be easier.

Thanks in advance for your input and have a great Thanksgiving!

I had mine taken out by the surgeon. He put it in, he should be the one who removes it, as he has your X Rays, Yada, Yada, Yada  I would go by the surgeon in charge, who probably saved your life !

The surgeon who did my colon surgery is different than the general surgeon who installed my port. My question is whether or not you had your port removed in the surgeon's office instead of at the hospital. My installation didn't go smoothly and it kinda scares me to think of having it done somewhere besides the hospital. Thanks!

I had mine out in I guess what I would call a simple operating room. They had a good amount of supplies of various sorts on hand but it was on the smaller side without a ton of equipment. One surgeon and one person to help. Because I didn't have a ride home, I couldn't have any sort of general anesthetic, so I had only local. Felt like a lot of hard pushing sideways on my skin and muscle tissue. Not the most pleasant sensation but not very painful either. I think I would have been worried if this was all done in a plain office.

It would make me nervous to have it done in an office, too.

Thanks everybody! I thought maybe I was just being silly but I'm going to push to have it somewhere besides the surgeons office!

To be more precise, I went to the hospital. As I was already paying for that visit, my surgeon also removed some cists that may become a problem

I had my port put in by a general surgeon in a hospital setting. And I was put out for most of it. I had my port removed in a hospital setting by another general surgeon and again I was "suppose" to be put out. Butt we all decided I did not need to go there. Thus I was awake. Depends on the Dr office. My PCP does have a special room where he had done a few out patient type procedures. Butt maybe having a port removed done in a hospital setting may be the best. I remember the surgeon had one heck of a time getting the port out because of so much scar tissue build up. Port was in me for over 2 years.

All the best,

I had mine put in by my colorectal surgeon under a general anaesthetic in hospital. It was also removed the same way. I had no choice as this is how he does it.
