Any recommendations on prevention diet?

Postby mostlysunny77 » Sun Oct 23, 2016 8:35 am

I am wondering if anyone has any great recommendations for books on diet and nutrition to help prevent colon cancer. Prevention is a little late for me as I already have CC but I want to do everything I can to keep it from coming back! I asked my oncologist if I should be on a certain kind of diet and his response was yes a "healthy" diet. Um, I already thought I was eating healthy so I thought I should research what exactly a healthy diet is and if there are foods I should stay away from to prevent CC. Any suggestions would be awesome! I'm a big reader and research junky! Thanks!

58 yo male at diagnosis: T1bN0M0, 0/15 nodes, low grade/moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma
03/2016 colonoscopy: 2 small polyps removed in left colon; CEA = 1.3
04/2016 colonoscopy: caecum sessile 3.5 cm polyp piecemeal removed with kind of clear margins
05/2016 "prophylactic" laparoscopic right hemicolectomy - bleeding, leak, infection
06/2017 CT scan, colonoscopy OK; CEA = 1.6
A lot of funny stuff discovered by CT scans in liver, kidney, lungs, arteries, gallbladder, lymph node, pancreas

Book Recommendation: Forks Over Knives (also a documentary).
Diet Recommendation: everything you know you should be doing, e.g., plant based, alcohol in moderation (if at all), avoid sugar unless it's a whole piece of fruit (with fiber), etc. Avoid foods you know you shouldn't be eating (red meats, processed foods, junk foods, etc.)
Other Recommendation: exercise daily

When I was diagnosed my first question was: How. Did. This. Happen!?! I was getting plenty of fiber because I was eating a plant-based diet (vegan, actually), I walked 4 miles a day, I meditated, and (except for the cancer) I was in excellent health and on no medication. All 4 of my doctors (primary care, gastroenterologist, surgeon, oncologist) said "it's not your fault" but they also thought it possible that my diet and general health might have kept the cancer from being more widespread.

Eat what you want in moderation and enjoy life.

Zephyr, not buying it. You were an extreme health nut and yet stage 1 in 09. Eating more grass got you stage 3 later? People need to stop concentrating on what caused it. We have genes that forgot how to multiply. Yes there are environmental factors but there are people on here that have lived in a bubble and ate all the right things and got this disease. Just like old James F. Fixx. He wrote books on running and dropped dead of a heart attack. Guess he wasted a lot of time running for nothing.

Here is a quick search of prior posts about the AntiCancer book by Dr. David Servan-Schreiber ( since 2008 )

search.php?st=0&sk=t&sd=d&sr=posts&keywords=AntiCancer+book&fid%5B%5D=1

As I recall there is good general "health" advice and discussion in the book, but I was not convinced it was going to cure or prevent cancer, just promote a better way of dealing with it and lessening the impact ???? JMO.

Servan-Schreiber died in 2011, after almost 20 years fighting brain cancer, so conceivably his methods bought him some extra time and helped to expand the discussion of more integrative approaches. It is an informative book and I found it easy to read...... AND in the process, he raised awareness for other cancer patients and future patients.

Cheers all

Thanks for the responses! I have ordered all of the books suggested and am looking forward to getting them this week! Thank you Amazon!!! :) Anyway, I figured I can at least research the link between cancer and eating the right foods and who knows maybe I'll lose a few pounds while I'm at it. It will also help keep my mind busy so I don't have time to dwell on the what ifs.

I'll be finishing treatment soon, and it's important to me to feel like I'm actively doing something to reduce the risk of recurrence. I've looked at what proper research has shown has a positive impact on recurrence risk:

- have at least 4 cups of coffee a day (reduce recurrence by half??)
- eat oily fish several times a week
- exercise

There seem to be a lot of links made between cancer and insulin (rather than sugar itself) which could explain why coffee and exercise are beneficial. Trying to increase your insulin sensitivity can only be a good thing.

Good luck!

The Servan-Schreiber book had a section in the middle with lists of good foods in different categories. I used these lists to select foods for my Stage II postchemo diet. I made lots of smoothies with my blender, lots of steamed vegetables, omelettes made using olive oil. Lots of fish (mackerel, sardines with plenty of turmeric and black pepper for seasoning). No sweets, no sugar, no alcohol. Green tea at every meal, and Gatorade if I needed to boost electrolytes. I've.never had a recurrence

WOW 4+ cups of coffee a day?! I can hardly handle having one a day

But thanks I will definitely look into this and see what further info I can find...and there I was thinking cutting out coffee was a good thing!
