Fact, hearsay, or opinion?

Postby Nik Colon » Sun Sep 25, 2016 1:41 am

I just wanted to put this out there. Unless you know something to be a fact, please state that it is an opinion or what you know, etc. I have seen many posts which the person writes something as a fact which is wrong. If you are not 100% sure, make sure to note that. If you know for a fact, then tell how or where you got the info.

New people here will take anything as fact if written as such (maybe not all, but many), so please word things carefully as I see this a lot.

I always include it is what I know, my opinion, what I heard, doc said, looked up, etc. And usually end with, "ask your doc/onc/etc"

Hi Nik,
Totally agree - this is important.
I have read here for many months but not posted much so far - hopefully I have not done it wrong.
But I believe this is a problem/a worry on many Forums. Having been a member of another Forum for many years I have seen this So many times.
Thank You. Kind Regards /LPL

Wise advice, Nik. Could you visit every Facebook post I've seen lately and offer the same advice? I've noticed a lot of people seem to think writing the word "FACT" in all caps at the end of a sentence magically changes their opinion into a fact!

Really good advice I think, for folks to state their "level of evidence" with any post.

IMO ...
My doc says ...
I read this ... here ...
Does anyone know about ... ?
My friend's friend did ... and now ...
I was having this issue and tried this ...

Although we ARE family here
we are really just another internet website which is HIGHLY searched and quoted.

Oh, did I say ....... this IS the internet

caveat emptor my friends
ALWAYS caveat emptor

Check things out .......

Thanks guys, I just want people to be careful how they word things since there are people who WILL take things as FACT when it may not be. I hope those who read and post will make sure to look up everything first, as mentioned. Also providing information to sources is a great thing :)

Can you provide the links to those posts, Nik, that you are using as a source for your caution?

So fact checking on our U.S. politics & fact checking on here too! Soon this thread will be buried. If a person notices misinformation, it benefits the board to speak up on that thread. If it is differing opinions among docs, that's also good to know. It's not like we haven't had differences on here before, but doesn't need to lead to that. If it does, so be it. If we can't speak up, then I guess we'll all just give one another *Hugs* & call it good.

I do reply to those posts, but I just wanted to put a reminder out there for both the posters and readers to double check.
