Thats great news that you have a plan. I think things always seem better when you have a path to travel, and things are less uncertain. Sending some Irish luck your way :D. The internet and this forum in particluar are a great tool, I certainly find it uplifting when through this forum you know there are people of every race and creed from all over the world thinking of you and wishing you well.

Having a plan definitely helps keep me on track. In a way it makes it easier to deal with side effects and tests etc.

Thank you for the luck, I am sending well wishes back your way :D

Thanks pita, I will need them. Dealing with abdominal pain and swelling the last few days. Ate something I shouldn't have. Despite my screen name beans and I do not get along. More aptly my digestive system and beans don't like each other. Needed protein and chewing was not a part of the equation because of mouth sores.

Hoping everything is working well by next weds. That is when my next infusion is. I'm hoping to feel better soon, I'm tired of not feeling well if that makes any sense.

Hi BeansMama,

If you have not seen this, here they have some tips:
http://m.cancer.org/treatment/survivors ... n-or-sores
"What to do for mouth sores -
What to eat or not eat when you have mouth sores
*"
Hm.. saw for High Protein some things they recommended was "Egg, cheese, and bean dishes" - maybe disregard those Beans for you ;-) But they also talk about shakes and using a straw... Maybe a Protein shake?
It is hard to know what to eat but we do need protein - aminoacids right?! Hubby has eaten a lot of protein after his last surgery and I believe it has been good for him and the healing.

Kind Regards /LPL

BeansMama, did they give you an Rx for Magic Mouthwash for your mouth sores? I also know of several people (including me) who used kefir for mouth sores. Kefir is a fermented milk product similar to yogurt, only like a yogurt shake! :D Brands include Greek Gods, Helios, Lifeway, and others. It's available in health food stores, but it's also stocked in many ordinary grocery stores. To prevent/heal mouth sores, you sip some and then hold it in your mouth for a few minutes, letting it coat the entire mouth area. Then swallow it. It worked for me and others. Worth a try!

I do not have the magic mouthwash as far as I know, the only thing that was prescribed to me was a nystatin swish and swallow for thrush (that stuff is gross!).

I have seen people recommend the magic mouthwash but honestly I'm not quite sure what it is or what to ask my oncologist for...

I do try to eat yogurt every day to help, I have never tried kefir. I have issues with consistency and texture so I have been wary of trying it.

Thank you so much CR!!! I will definitely ask for the magic mouthwash. The link was incredibly helpful — making sure to save it just in case!

Hi Beans,
My Onc gave me a prescription for Magic Mouthwash and I took it to the pharmacy and my insurance wouldn't cover it because it contains over the counter medications and they said I needed a separate prescription for each drug and then I could find the formula on line to make it myself.
Just in case you can't get your prescription filled... Last month's dentist appointment I was telling her how dry my mouth is and she gave me a few $2.50 off coupons for Biotene and suggested trying it. Bought the toothpaste and the dry mouthwash and a spray for my purse. Working great, helps with dry mouth and the 2 sores I had are now gone. :)

I used to make my own kefir but I made water kefir because I'm lactose intolerant, not sure if it works like milk kefir but it is available at the grocery store. JulieJ do you know if this would work, would be a lot cheaper then Biotene plus better for me/us?

Hugs and prayers... ox

Thank you for the info on biotene! My mouth does seem to dry out a lot and that definitely makes the pain worse.

How awful they told you that you would have to mix it yourself! I should check my insurance to see if it would be covered or not thanks for that heads up :)

Pita, Lifeway Kefir is 99% lactose-free! :D It tastes great too! I "mature" my kefir by shaking it once or twice a day (after making sure the lid is on tight!). The shaking prevents yeasts from growing and further reduces that remaining 1% of lactose.

http://lifewaykefir.com/why-our-kefir-is-99-percent-lactose-free/

A water kefir should work the same for mouth sores though. The thicker texture of regular kefir makes it easier to coat your mouth area, but as long as you hold it in your mouth for a few minutes, it should work the same.

Some insurance companies can be difficult about paying for magic mouthwash. There is a "magic mouthwash compounding kit" that comes with a single unique NDC number accounting for all the ingredients, which can make billing less complicated in some cases. You might ask your pharmacists if he/she can order that. But in the meantime, give the kefir a try. Remember to swish it around in your mouth a few times a day. It has worked for many people!
