So sorry to hear that you have to deal with all of this now!

I am in a local support group and a few women had breast cancer and opted for the mastectomies and reconstructive surgery. One of the women has had major issues with her implants and she is having everything re-done in December. I would recommend vetting the surgeon carefully if you go this route.

My thoughts are with you! Good luck with whatever you decide.

Just wanted to share that the process, while challenging, isn't a horror story for everyone... I have a friend who was at high risk for BC due to another cancer she had as a child, and her docs recommended mastectomy and reconstruction as the safest route. She was 40 at the time. The first week at home was tough for her, because she couldn't use her arms much and needed a lot of help from hubby with basic care; after that her recovery went very smoothly. As a bonus, she was thrilled with the results of her reconstruction (very large chest originally, she chose for her "new" breasts to be smaller and has since found exercise, buying clothes/swimwear, etc. much easier).

No matter what, not an easy choice and I can't imagine the stress you must be under. I'll be thinking of you.

Thank you Aja for the encouragement. The difficulty of the decision is increased by the fact that i am morally exhausted from the colon cancer so i thought of buying myself time with the lumpectomy because if it comes back it will be locally again and then i will be more convinced of the need to take them out. But then again...3rd cancer!

I can only imagine how exhausted you must be. You asked what others would do - pretty much thinking the same as you mentioned above, I would probably go with the lumpectomy.

I'm so sorry, Lydia--that just stinks. No real advice other than if you're thinking of the mastectomy route, I'd probably just do both sides at once and get it over with. What a crappy decision to have to make :( .

Hi Lydia
So sorry to hear that it was confirmed breast cancer. I'm literally in the same boat as you and am faced with the decision of which type of surgery will be best.

After having rectal cancer just a year ago I was diagnosed with invasive ductile carcinoma in my left breast on Aug 11th. I thought I was just facing a lumpectomy, radiation and hormone therapy. An MRI done two weeks ago showed what we thought was one 8mm spot of concern in the right breast so I went today for a diagnostic mammo and an ultrasound with guided biopsy on it. Once they started the ultrasound they decided there was actually two spots to biopsy. If either one comes back as anything even remotely cancer related I think double mastectomy (although a very hard decision) will be a better choice for me.

I was talking options with the US tech today and he said and I quote "If you just have cancer in one breast, lumpectomy would be a good choice. If you have it in both breasts, two lumpectomies although not done very often would still be an option, but what are you waiting on? A third occurrence and a third lumpectomy?"

I really empathize with you, its a hard decision to make. I hope all goes well for you. Please keep us informed of your decision. Praying for you.

I have had breast cancer in both....one triple negative, the other 10% positive for hormones. I had lumpectomy for each...chemo...radiation. Md Anderson is where I go. All the Drs agreed lumpectomy was better than taking both off for me. Both were caught early with no lymph node involvement. The first was in 2012 and the triple negative this year....so I guess I will be a continuing patient for a few years for checkups ;) I could have insisted on complete mastectomy but I read a lot of info on the problems it can bring. I figured I have enough side effects to deal with already. So I will just try to watch my sugar intake...watch my stress... And watch my weight. The three biggies MD Anderson has cautioned me about.

Good luck to you.

Aren't we just terribly unfortunate, although i guess it can always be worse.
I am leaning towards lumpectomy and radiation. I think for a 1.5 cm of dcis, to take 2 breasts out, seems radical, but then again i am predisposed... So I don't know. My mri was clean besides the 1.5 cm.

But I understand it is a very difficult decision to make no matter the circumstances.

Here is a podcast about this decision- it might help.

I certainly do know what you mean by it could be worse. That's one reason I never really posted on here much. There were so many on here that were going through so much more than i was that I almost felt ashamed to put myself in the same catagory as them.

I only decided to reach out after my second diagnosis because I seen a few if you on here in the same situation as me. I posted a time or two on a different discussion board but the response there was very lacking. This board seems like "home".

I thank God for this discussion board because I knew from reading other posts about the correlation between colorectal and breast cancer in women and knew to go to the Dr sooner than I probably would have normally. Like I told my doc last week, I prefer to discover all my cancers in the early stages. :D

I am really hoping that my results turn out well on the right breast so that all I will need is a lumpectomy. The more I read and the more images I look at of the results of some mastectomies and reconstruction, the less appealing it is. By the way, thanks for the links.
