I have a friend who was at high risk for BC due to another cancer she had as a child, and her docs recommended mastectomy and reconstruction as the safest route. She was 40 at the time. The first week at home was tough for her, because she couldn't use her arms much and needed a lot of help from hubby with basic care; after that her recovery went very smoothly. As a bonus, she was thrilled with the results of her reconstruction (very large chest originally, she chose for her "new" breasts to be smaller and has since found exercise, buying clothes/swimwear, etc. much easier).
No matter what, not an easy choice and I can't imagine the stress you must be under. I'll be thinking of you.

But then again...3rd cancer!

So sorry to hear that it was confirmed breast cancer. I'm literally in the same boat as you and am faced with the decision of which type of surgery will be best.
After having rectal cancer just a year ago I was diagnosed with invasive ductile carcinoma in my left breast on Aug 11th. I thought I was just facing a lumpectomy, radiation and hormone therapy. An MRI done two weeks ago showed what we thought was one 8mm spot of concern in the right breast so I went today for a diagnostic mammo and an ultrasound with guided biopsy on it. Once they started the ultrasound they decided there was actually two spots to biopsy. If either one comes back as anything even remotely cancer related I think double mastectomy (although a very hard decision) will be a better choice for me.
I was talking options with the US tech today and he said and I quote "If you just have cancer in one breast, lumpectomy would be a good choice. If you have it in both breasts, two lumpectomies although not done very often would still be an option, but what are you waiting on? A third occurrence and a third lumpectomy?"
I really empathize with you, its a hard decision to make. I hope all goes well for you. Please keep us informed of your decision. Praying for you.
