Is CEA generally checked during adjuvant chemo?

Postby nomoretacos » Thu Aug 25, 2016 8:18 am

Mine isn't being checked. They said they would start monitoring it after chemo was finished but not during.

Just wanted to hear other peoples experiences
03/16 Dx Stage IIIC, sigmoid resection surgery,T3 N2b M0, 7/20 nodes, 4 tumor deposits, CEA 3.7, age 31
04-10/16 Folfox with delays and reductions
10/16 Post chemo CT scan shows two non specific spots (one liver, one lung)
11/16 Port removed
12/16 CEA 0.9
09/17 NED
03/18 NED

Yes, ours was checked every 3 months. I can increase just because of the chemo, but it's the trend that is important so having it done during chemo is still helpful. My husbands chemo was considered adjuvant as well.

Checked regularly.

Mine was never terribly high, but it's down to 1.0 now.
DX Stage 4 2/16 with lung mets
4/16 CT, PET show "marked improvement" in size and number of lung mets, rectal tumor.
8/16 "Great report" from scans, lung mets continue to shrink in size and number, CEA 1.6, cancer "in remission" but surgeon believes tumor remains too large.
10/16 Xrays for constipation problems reveal tumor occupies 25 percent of rectal canal: Occupied 80 percent upon diagnosis 2/16
12/16 Back on Avastin; tumor can be removed, but need better margins.

Hi nomoretacos,
My DH's markers (CEA & CA 19-9) was checked before & after colon surgery. Then he had 4 Folfox before now planned liver surgery. I asked to have it checked again before this upcoming surgery. It was obviously not something they 'needed'? but they said: OK if you want..
I had read:
"Most expert panels, including the EGTM, currently recommend measurement of CEA in monitoring patients with advanced CRC receiving chemotherapy. "

During chemo my CEA was checked routinely together with the other blood work, the day before the start of each chemo cycle. CEA went up during the first 2 cycles and then started to go down. Oncs saw this as indication that chemo could work and boy were they right. Apparently CEA is a good indicator for me and we continue monitoring it at each check-up. See sig.
Dec 2012 - CC 2 unresect liver mets, CEA 41.8 (MM 65yrs)
Jan 2013 - colectomy @ spleen 2/26 nodes IVa T3N1bM1a
Feb-Jul - 1x Xelox-7x Xelox/Avastin, shrinkage from #3
Aug - 2x PV embolization (both failed)
Sep 2013 - R liver resect, 25d hosp (liver failure/delirium, lung emboli, encephalopathy), no living cancer (pCR)
2014/15 - recovery, scopy: 2 polyps
2016 - new town/life
2018, scopy: 2 polyps
2018/20 low (1.0-1.4) CEAs/clean CTs: 4x2014, 6x2015-17, 3x2018-20
next June 2021!
