high bp plus rapid pulse with Avastin?

Postby MikeManess » Sat Jul 23, 2016 8:13 pm

I've been having high blood pressure and very rapid pulse on and off for a couple of weeks. I went to the ER a couple of weeks ago because of going into AFIB and was admitted overnight for observation.

The high blood pressure (165/130) and rapid pulse (currently 145bpm) are a bit concerning to me. It comes and goes, but I never had this issue before until I was put on Avastin (6 weeks ago, 3 infustions). These symptoms started occurring after the 2nd infusion and are still continuing after the 3rd infusion. I do have an appointment with a cardiologist on the 28th, but I was curious if others have had this same side-effect.

I hope someone else answers you :D
You haven't changed anything else have you? Like meds or mt dew? My BP went up 6 months ago after I changed to mt dew. 160/100. & 115 heart rate. It has stopped now. But I think if I would have ever tried an energy drink it probably would have killed me :)

So you have gotten bloodwork from Onc? Low potassium & high potassium are bad. Can give you heart attack.
My husband was low on sodium. They aren't having you drink V8 are they? It's 400 mg instead of 90 like the low sodium V8s.

That's all I got. I hope someone can answer about avastin. Magnesium is a blood thinner. Be careful.

My blood pressure has slowly been rising on avastin, but no bp meds yet.
My heart rate is climbing as well. Usually up around 100.

Im aften breathless after going up stairs, but the pulmonary function guy said it looks more like my heart than my lungs.

Maybe i should give up soda? But its decaffeinated.

I don't really understand the difference in treatment protocols between oncologists some times.... My wife who had low BP in the first place because she was a long time distance runner, was put on Lisinopril, at the same time she was started on Avastin because this is a known side effect of the drug. She takes a low dose of this Ace inhibitor and has not had an issue even though she has been on Avastin for almost three years. I seem to recall that several people on this forum have described this issue before, and that after the symptom shows up their doctor puts them on a BP med after the fact rather than up front at the start. From what I understand Ace inhibitors seem to be the preferred med, vs diuretics, when used with Avastin by Oncologists that are long time prescribers of Avastin. I have worked in both Anticancer, (Lots of different mechanisms of action) and Cardiovascular (Renin, Angiotensin I and II, FGF, PDGF and VEGF the later 3 also anticancer targets) drug discovery so I understand quite a bit about these mechanisms of action, and how they interrelate. I was not surprised at all when my wife's oncologist put her on an ACE inhibitor.

If you haven't done so already - GO SEE YOUR DOCTOR(s) ASAP! This can have serious consequences.
