How about a kindle if he is into reading? Also beautiful photo frames or one of those electronic frames that can have a slide show for many photos? I think the electronic photo frame is pretty inexpensive now.

I talked to a friend who is a doctor, and she said doctors get lots of junk from their patients, which then usually get donated to thrift stores.
Since then, I give baked goods, a fruit basket, or other consumables the doctor can share with office staff.
I notice the office staff all know me by name now... :D

Is he from a different culture then where he is working/living? My parents gave their surgeon a beautiful selection of Indian sweets as he is Indian & he was really touched by this & loved it.
Dad diagnosed Sept 14 Stage IV. Age 57yrs. Transverse colon - spread to Retroperitoneal, Mesenteric & Supraclavicular lymph nodes. Folfiri commenced Sept 14.
April 15 - Bowel resection
August 15, stable scan
Feb 16 - No signs of cancer on scan...stop chemo & scan in 3 month
Scan April 16, Crazy growth to stomach, lymph nodes & multiple mets to liver. Commencing Folfox.
August: chemo not working. Stopped treatment.
September 3rd 2016 peacefully left this earth.

Hi,
I understand your dilemma my mum loves to give and seven years into this its hard to stay fresh. She has given " afternoon tea" vouchers to some surgeons, to another in a different city she got vouchers for a meal in a nice restaurant. Recently she gave vouchers to a nice department store so they remained useful. To the nursing staff she had me going round looking for specialist chocolates so they were a treat. All of this is normally done by me the morning after her surgery as its most pressing in her mind. It makes me laugh but I appreciate she cares. This year I just emailed her surgeon on the 5th anniversary of her liver surgeon and that was appreciated just as much.
Hope you get something,
Stu

I love to be able to say "thank you" in a way that is personal and unique.

I was recently given a gift of a hand-made, glass-blown votive tea candle from a small company in New York called GlassyBaby.

The candles are made of a quality glass and are available in a variety of colors with names/logos that identify the meaning of the candle. With each sale, a donation is made to a charitable organization. The company was originated by a woman with cancer when she, herself, was undergoing treatment. It is an inspiring story that can be read on the company's web site.

Each candle arrives in a lovely white gift box with attractive white cotton ribbon. A handwritten note (of your words and dictation) is included. And I mean the note is handwritten. Someone in the company has beautiful handwriting.

Each candle is shipped FedEx next day air, at no additional charge.

I was so touched to receive this gift - just last week. It arrived at a time when my own health was ailing. The soft glow of the votive candle is both physically and emotionally healing. I admit that I have lit the candle each evening since I received it.

I enjoyed the gift of the votive tea candle so much that I thought that I would mention it here and provide the web site.

Given him a warm treat or a homemade cake or sweet. That will be the sweetest memory you can give him.

My ortho retired this year after 30+ years in practice and for our family, after 20+ years of seeing us....the kids for those broken bones, etc. that come along with playing sports and me for bad knees, wrist replacement....you name it.
I found out from his long time Medical Assistant that he was an ardent Starbucks customer...never missed a day of getting his coffee. I didn't want to just get him a Starbucks card so instead, knowing his likes, passions and hobbies, I went and had a special & unique Starbucks travel mug made, complete with a barcode on it so that the tumbler/mug was actually his Starbucks card. If he is at his place in Palm Springs, he can use it there....if he is at his home up here....he can use it here. He told me that it was so incredibly cool but now his mom (she must be in her 90's ) and his wife would want one as well!

The other thing that I 'gave' to him, which I know meant a lot to him, was a card, signed by the members of my family, telling him how much they appreciated everything he had done for all of us. Then, I gave him a big hug and he reciprocated back. Get a card, but have it signed by other members of your family in addition to you so that your doc knows that EVERYONE and not just you thanks him. Don't forget the hug! :D
