28 with precancerous polyp

Postby Sheilaleafty » Sat Jul 23, 2016 8:06 am

Hello everyone,

I am 28 and have had many issues with my bowls my entire life. I recently had a colonoscopy and the doctor found a 4mm precancerous adenomatous polyp. The doctor said he wanted me to have another colonoscopy in 5 years but gave me no other information. I have a sister and 3 brothers one is my twin. After reading other posts a lot of people say to make sure your siblings get tested. So I guess I need to have them all go in. Im guess I'm just confused. I am just not sure what to think.

I would probably want to go back in sooner than 5 years.

It wouldn't be a bad idea for your siblings to be tested.

Hi Sheila! I don't think you have too much to be worried about. I suspect that there are lots of 28 year olds that have a small, single polyp that they don't even know about. Regarding testing of family members, that applies to people with suspected genetic conditions. If your scope in five years reveals lots of polyps or some that are very advanced, it might be worth pursuing genetic testing. I think that your good news is that you may have prevented colon cancer that could have developed well in the future. Go out and have fun!

Have you been tested for Lynch Syndrome?

Personally, I wouldn't be comfortable waiting 5 years. Ask the doctor for more information.

I know many people suggest get tested for lynch which they many times suggest for young people. But in reality, lynch is rare. Most get crc/polyps for no known reason (no history, etc)

I forgot to add that I would push for genetic testing if you have a history of colon cancer at younger ages in your family.

I had a 1.2 cm tubulovillous adenoma (benign) found during colonoscopy in December 2014. I was 34 then. My doctor said it was safe to wait 3 years for next scope, but I'm scheduled to have it done this October. Since mine was so big & I was only 34, I was scared to wait that long... Fingers crossed for a clear colonoscopy this time around! I'm Lynch negative.
