Btw - collapsed lungs?!

Postby HopeForJesse » Wed Jul 20, 2016 2:11 pm

DH had post liver op CT scan to check for blood clots last week. Good results - no clot is all we were told. CT results show up on MSK portal today (when I am actually looking for pathology) and list Bilateral passive atelectasis which no one mentioned. Translation is partially collapsed lungs. WTH - anyone experience this? Need to worry? Discharge pending tomorrow. Thanks!

DH had atecalactis the night he went to the ER with abdominal pain when he was first diaganosed. After I got his discharge papers I read about the atecalactis. I called my aunt, a nurse who said *yeah, him and everyone else * has it. She said it was likely due to him being in pain.

My husband has had this showing up on his scans for 18+ months now. It can be mild or severe. If it was something to worry about he would probably be feeling it.

I don't believe I had issues (idk, never mentioned anything about it), but it was harder to breathe and they had me constantly doing the breathing thing where you suck into the plastic thing to see how your lungs are doing. It was really hard at first, I do remember that.

I had it twice. Painful to lie on side. Used the spirometer to keep it inflated. Both times were after sbrt. Then, finally my right diaphragm went paralyzed due to radiation damage to the phrenic nerve, and now lung is only partial function.

Someone else said that, but it's true. It's always been my approach. Too many details and I start to get nervous. I prefer to judge my condition on how I feel, not what some test or scan may or may not show. It's all I've got.

I have had a partially collapsed lung as well as a pneumothorax, and neither one caused me any pain or other discomfort. The PX needed to be treated with a chest tube, however. Cleared it up in a week.

Just to clarify - atelectasis is not technically a "collapsed lung". Atelectasis is when you do not take deep enough breaths (especially due to pain, illness, sitting in bed) to inflate your lungs. Use the incentive spirometer like they tell you, sit up in a chair instead of laying in the bed and be up and around as much as you can. It will get back to normal over time.

DH has had that noted in every CT since his surgery in December. It has gotten better, then got worse following his liver resection. It is very common and I would not worry. Make sure he keeps using the spirometer. I think DH's enlarged liver had something to do with it also, as it was always noted on the right side, and only as bilateral after surgeries. Dh ended up with a large liver abscess though following his liver resection, so keep an eye out for symptoms like shoulder pain, URQ pain, etc. We brushed it off as nerve pain at first. Wish DH had gone in sooner like I wanted him to.

Mary,
How is Jesse doing?
Thinking and praying for you both. How was today's visit with Dr K?
I hope we will be able to meet sometime again.

Hi Mariane,
Thanks for checking back. He is finally much better but seemed like he was just sleeping/recovering forever over the past week. Yesterday was a long day - with train/subway and 6 appointments we were gone from the house for 14 hours but lucky to be able to return same day.
I was exhausted so can't even imagine how he felt.

How was your Monday appointment?

We will be there again 8/10 and 8/31. Can't state how much I am indebted to MSK and Dr K and this forum. I know it is still a long road but feeling much more hopeful than we have in months. CEA finally under 5 too:) New scan will be in 2 months. There is a questionable 3m new spot on the liver - already!! but hopefully just surgical damage (please!)

Prayers for you continue as well - keep in touch so we can catch up in person when the appointments line up :D Hope you have still been able to keep up the walking with this awful heat lately.

Sounds like the two of you have met, how nice! My best to all...

Noted on the scan or just noted by Dr. K? She said there were a few spots on DH's scan she wants to watch. But Dr. D and the radiologist didn't mention them. It is always something. How I wish they would just say "it all looks great, get out of here and never come back!"
