Fruit fly study update

Postby mariane » Wed Jun 29, 2016 9:45 pm

Today I got a phone call from Dr A (principal investigator) from Mt Sinai in NY that researches were able to replicate my tumor DNA and will concentrate now on putting it to fruit fly model to find alternative meds for my crc cancer. Replication is not always possible so I am happy that it was successful. Anyway I am posting about it that it is non invasive study, helping to understand tumor genetics better and potentially helpful. It may also contribute to understand genetics of crc in general and find the way to new therapies.

In February they published info about some success with lung cancer treatment:

I remember hearing about this, but it's hard to look up since search doesn't let 3 letters. So only fruit will show.

JulieJ, I am sorry I respond so late. Of course I will let you know whenever I will get any results. As far as I know the study is still open. The study itself does not affect treatment and the results can be interesting. The principal investigator Dr A is super nice and calls me herself whenever there is progress. We will see whether they will be able to come up with new meds etc.

Mariane,

How did you become involved in this study? Who do we contact? We are in the NY area and may be worth a call to see if DH qualifies.

I learnt about it from Julie YW thread about the study from autumn last year. I called Mt Sinai in NY and scheduled an appointment with Dr Ang (the principal investigator). You need to bring tissue samples from the primary tumor/mets. The best samples are pre-chemo since DNA of the tumor is not damaged. It may be impossible to replicate DNA to put it into flies if DNA of the tumor is too damaged by chemo. They extensively check tumor DNA for mutations, test meds on tumor DNA put into fruit flies. They may come up with some new meds available to kill the tumor. You can continue treatment in your facility. I stay with MSKCC for my regular treatment.

Mariane, I cam across this older post of yours after doing a search on Fruit Fly Study because someone in The MSS Clinic in Colontown said they were responding to the study. Did you do the study and did it help?
Stage 3 1a March 2014
Adjuvant Therapy Stopped due to Partial DPD deficiency
lymph node mets to para aortic area CEA at 25 Dec 2015
Folfox 50% 5 FU -doing Ok- CEA 14 - lymph nodes shrinking - 3/16
Oxaliplatin dropped - CT scan clear - CEA 7- 6/16
Superclavicular + pelvic nodes + para aortic nodes CEA 58 10/16
Folfiri 10/16
Nodes shrinking Chemo Break 2/17

Hi,
It is very interesting that somebody responded to the study.
I am predominantly Dr Kemeny's patient and after my 4 surgeries I got to NEDville a year ago. Therefore I did not need the fruit fly study. I received a phone call from Mt Sinai that my tumor DNA got replicated in the flies and they had interesting results. They were going to call me with more info. Last time I talked to them 2 months ago.
I have been doing well. I honestly hope I will not ever need it. However I was stage 4 at diagnosis.... future is very uncertain. I got complete pathological response and it changed my gruesome initial prognosis. My last scans in February were clear and CEA lowest ever but nobody knows. I will sigh with relief a year from now. My CEA dropped to low normal in October 2015. I am only 6 moths off 5FU and over a year since FOLFIRI. We will see. I feel well.
When I learn something about the study I will let you know.

Good Luck!

I received a phone call from Mt Sinai last week. They have treatment plan for me ready in case of recurrence. They cannot reveal it to me now since I am still NED. I asked whether it involved chemotherapy meds. The answer to this question was: "No". I do not know much but it is very interesting, and may be my insurance policy. My scans early this week were all good, as were CEA and colonoscopy. 3 months of good life again. Scientifically it is all very interesting but I would like to never check it.
