Reversal on June 14

Postby tarheelmom » Thu Jun 16, 2016 8:15 am

I had my ileostomy reversal on Tuesday and am being discharged today. My kids all signed the bag (like people sign a vast) before I went into the OR. Surgery went fine. I was very nauseous after the procedure, and took some anti-nausea medicine. I was up and walking a few hours after surgery. My bowels woke up around 4 am this morning. I don't have much control and am going very frequently but I think it will just take time. My butt is already sore!

It does take time and you may have good days and bad days. Know that it does get better. Be kind to yourself and keep the faith!

Ha! I love that all your kids signed the last bag! :D

It takes time to adjust - remember your colon has been "asleep" for quite awhile. Stay close to restrooms for the next several weeks. Stock up on soft toilet paper, flushable baby wipes, Gas-X, Imodium, and Calmoseptine (for sore butts!). Start tracking what you eat and you'll notice certain things cause more urgency. It doesn't necessarily mean you'll never be able to eat them, but you have to go slow, adding just a few new foods at a time. Right now oatmeal, bananas, white rice, etc. are your friends!

Hugs!

Glad to hear the surgery went well. That's impressive that you were up and walking just a few hours after surgery!

For some reason I felt much less nauseous when I was walking plus the surgeon challenged me to try to walk the same day as the surgery. I also declined all pain mesds but Tylenol. The nurse was really pushing me to take something before I walked and basically told me that it was a one in a million chance that I could walk and not be in agony. I was very determined to prove him wrong. It wasn't easy but it wasn't horrific plus the pain of walking seemed to mitigate the nausea. There was no way I wanted to vomit right after abdominal surgery. I'm surprised by the size of the incision - about 4". Much larger than the scars from the ULAR.
