Post op Hipec

Postby cancer2015 » Fri Jun 03, 2016 6:09 pm

:D HELLO. I AM NEW HERE. September of 2015 I was diagnosed with colon cancer. Had surgery they removed a large tumor( transverse colon) ending colon as well. Cancer was in omentum and nodes, hence stage IV. Started chemo 5 fu and oxy for 5 treatments, (liver didn't handle this well. I then had Hipec done in March2016. Here is my question. I did SUPER with the procedure. 8 hours of surgery with no compllications and discharged in 5 days! NOW I am having pain across when I take a quick breath in. Almost like my diaphragm is envolved. Has anyone else experienced this post op?

You are lucky to have tolerated HIPEC surgery so well. I think it is common to have some pain and aches postoperatively. I have also had som pain and a feeling of tightness around the lower part of my chest, but nothing shows up on CT. I guess it may be adhesions from surgery. Good luck to you.

Yes, I had the same discomfort for several months post HIPEC. It especially hurt in the lower abdomen during laughing while watching American Dad.

:) Thank you very much for the welcome, and also the input. I have found this site very helpful! It is hard to explain things to others who have no idea what we go thru. Everyone here is in the same position, unfortunately! Thanks again.

Hi
I had a lot of post HIPEC pain. My add would be that some of it was neuropathic, and the result of nerves caught up in the healing scar tissue. In my case it was particularly bad low down and kicked in about a month after the op. I was given pregabalin which fixed it, but was tough to come off. Good luck.

Hello cancer2015, I had some chest discomfort and some difficulty breathing deeply without pain shortly after I was discharged from my hipec. I went to Emerg and they checked my heart and checked for blood clots and everything looked ok. The pain and shortness of breath went away on its own in time. I just slowly built up my endurance again. I know this is a bit different from what you are experiencing but just so you know, it's possible it will be nothing.

Hello.
Had apt today with surgical oncologist. We discussed the pain and after examination he says, adhesions are the cause. Until my weight drops or I begin throwing up we are just letting this go. When he did the Hipec it took 3 hours to get thru the "mess" of scar tissue, so I Not the best news, but my CEA is normal! :D Bllod work next month and scans in September! Onward with "normal" life for now! Is there anyone who has had HIPEC and not had any recurrence??? Just curious.

SkiFletch is the only one I am aware of and his hipec was done more as a precaution if I remember correctly. Congrats on a good cea, wishing you the best and long mileage.

My boyfriend has been diagnosed stage iiic/iv (staging has always been weird. One report said they overstaged him at one point but he had peritoneal metastasis and he had several infected lymph nodes) . He had a right hemicolectomy in July 2014 and HIPEC March 2015. He started chemo again January 2016 and is currently on a break. Since hes stopped chemo he has been having very bad stomach pain. He says its mostly burning sensation. He hasn't had more than 2-3 hours sleep/day in about 2 months because of the pain. His pain meds arent even able to control it enough for him to sleep.

He says the pain is worst when he lies down and stands up straight so he spends most of the day sitting up in a chair. Currently I'm at the hospital. He's been here 3 times in past week because the pain is so unbearable. So far even the meds he's getting at the hospital only provide relief for 2 hours max. Since he's been complaining about the pain we've seen his oncologist, GI specialist and talked to several ER doctors. They don't see any reason he should be having the pain and latest colonoscopy showed an ulcer and inflammation near surgical scars. So right now only thing we can do is try to manage the pain which is proving difficult. One doctor said it could just be nerve damage caused by the hipec or some kind of chemical reaction caused by surgery.

Its been frustrating for him and also for me watching him suffer. So I'm wondering if others had any similar intense pains after. It just seems strange this is starting over a year after his surger . Also any relief that you guys have found? I saw one post that mentioned a drug that helped but was hard to get off. Just trying to find something that will finally help. Also did anyone have luck working with pain management specialists or other specialized doctors? Any reccomendations appreciated.

Thank you to original poster for bringing up topic. I hope you are finding relief for the pain.

Hello
My dad is 4 weeks post HIPEC only no other resections. This is preventative because his tumor perforated the peritoneum doctors want to make sure if there is any free floating cancer cells that they are wiped out.
He is still having major pain across his abdomen. He has had bloodwork and a CT scan. Ct scan showed fluid in his abdomen a aeronautics but no other abnormalities or signs of infection. He is on pain medication but wears off in 2-3 hours. Surgeon says pain is from inflammation. He is taking oxycodone for pain. I have no idea where to go from here. His appetite is low but he tolerates meals no nausea no vomit. I see someone else is experienced this. Did the pain improve? Any suggestions greatly appreciated? We are just hoping and praying the pain goes away soon. My dad is becoming depressed from always being in pain.
