I still think about cancer every day but I can go long periods without thinking about it, which was unimaginable five years ago. Someday down the line this monster could come back and but for now I'm going to concentrate on having a great summer. After 5 years NED, my oncologist suggested that if I was still interested in periodic follow-ups then I should come in every 9 months. I decided that an occasional visit to my neighborhood primary care doctor was sufficient. After my last colonoscopy, the gastroenterologist said I should telephone him after 5 years to determine if another exam would be advisable. I'm glad to be free of frequent doctor visits, but I sometimes feel nostalgic about all the medical staff I no longer visit regularly.
Stage 3 R/C -1 node+ ( 7/09)
5 wks radiation, 2 wks chemo: 5FU (8-9/09)
Rectal surgery: tumor removal (11/09)
10 rounds Xeloda: 3000mg/daily 1 wk on/1 wk off (1/10-6/10)
Supplements: Aspirin, Calcium, Vit. D3
03/27/17: 7+ yrs. since surgery--still NED

Congrats!!!! I'm one year out with clean scans and everything and can't wait to reach the 5 year mark and get dumped too!
