It is a recurrence

Postby Apple1291 » Wed May 11, 2016 3:15 pm

My dad had a colonoscopy this morning. They found a tumour at the original resection site between the large and small bowel. They are also assuming the peritoneal nodules are mets. The surgeon said no surgery just chemo although it probably won't help. He has an appointment with his onc on Friday morning to figure it all out. So far I think I've read what seems like the entire internet and I know that there are still some options. He's currently being treated at Credit Valley in Mississauga, Ontario. I'd like him to get a second opinion at Mount Sinai and Princess Margaret in Toronto. I know that Mount Sinai has a hipec specialist.

I have 2 questions for you guys...

1. How do we get a second opinion? It seems like everything takes soooo long. It took almost a month to get a colonoscopy done after his last scan showed some trouble spots.

2. How do I deal with all of the emotional stuff that I'm feeling? My heart is truly broken. I'd go into detail about how amazing my dad is, but I'm not sure my heart can handle that right now.

I'm sure I'll have more questions and I'm so grateful for any advice.

Hi Annie (from Ottawa ON!)

second opinions are tricky in Canada :( Easiest way I've found is to go to your GP and ask them to request it with the person you want to meet. Though I would start chemo while you're waiting. Several people here have had HIPEC and Steph had it in Toronto region. I'll see if I can PM you both in one message :)

The emotional stuff is it's own thing :( Seek out the help of a counsellor. IMO its hugely helpful.

Chin up,
Elise
