Local Excision Pain and Recovery Time

Postby MDK » Sat May 07, 2016 10:20 am

On April 22 I had a local excision for my rectal cancer. I am still having pain in the rectal area, constipation - this has just been a long journey and I am so tired and discouraged. Probably I am just not healing as quickly as I wish. If I take a stool softener then I have accidents, or extremely sticky bowel movements - if I don't I have even worse constipation. If I don't take my pain medication every four hours, the pain returns with a vengeance.

Has anyone had this procedure and what has your experience been?

I thank you for your help. I cry a lot, have lost my job and just wonder if I will ever recover. A very dark time.

I had Rectal cancer, but I had LAR with TME surgery and not a local excision .check my signature. Have you tried sugar free Metamucil? It will soften you up and keep you somewhat regular I would think . Since you have your whole rectum, but you have to drink plenty of water with it. Also you might want to try a probiotic, my gastrointestinal doctor recommended a P&G product called Align . I take it everyday along with the Metamucil. Good luck to you.

So sorry this is such a dark time. Pain makes all things unbearable. I agree with the Metamucil and align or some type of probiotic. Diet also plays a key role. On slow days I still rely on my good ole prune juice but not too much. You are in our prayers. This board is a wealth of information. Try search for previous threads about local rectal incision.

I had an excision before my lar. My surgeon said it was just a little worse than a colonoscopy....not! It took about 4 weeks to be able to sit on the floor without pain. I didn't have constipation issues, but I just wanted to let you know that it does get better.

They couldn't reach mine without a proctoscope; so I had TEMS instead of simple local excision. After that I was sore enough to need some vicodin for 2 weeks (perhaps out of a 4-week prescription suggesting that was the expectation) and non-prescription pain killers another week or two. After the 10 days I was told not to ride my bike it took another two weeks before I was comfortable enough for my usual length ride.

I ate a stool softener daily and avoided problems with constipation from the opiates.

After breaking my leg and eating a lot more narcotics (a stretched nerve really hurt) dulcolax did the trick too with less impact on consistency.

Good luck.
