Oxaliplaton reaction

Postby crazylife » Wed May 04, 2016 6:38 pm

Hubby had a major reaction during chemo number 9. Doc said she felt like he could handle a full dose, but boy was she wrong. Luckily it happened at the cancer center, so they switched him to 5FU only. I am now concerned it won't be as effective. Anyone have experience with this?

I would not give up on the Oxi just yet.
I would speak to the oncologist beforehand and discuss the possibility of going with a De-Sensitization program.
In my partner's case it ran over 3 rounds of chemo and she has had about 3 rounds since without any reaction. Basically they administer in small but increasing doses over an extended time frame. From start to finish each cycle took about 11 hours.
Besides if your hubby is Stage 3 , 8 rounds of Oxi is probably enough anyway.

Sorry I didn't see that your hubby was Stage 4.

I can't take Oxa due to pre-existing neuropathy, so I am on 5-FU only. I asked about the difference in effectiveness and was told it was less than 5%. I am unsure of the validity of this statement, but that is what I was told.

Hope that's helpful. <:- )

9 tx with oxi? If so, that should be plenty as they are looking at now doing less than 12. I would say cut out the oxi if severe se's. They stopped mine after my 3rd. My disco nurse thought I might have had a stroke, went to ER and all was ok, but they wanted to err on the side of caution. Did 4th wo. After surgery switched to folfiri. Didn't finish the iri either, ugh. But it depends on what a body can handle.

I was able to get through all 12 with oxi, but each person is different. I spoke with my oncologist in depth before each infusion regarding how my side effects were, if they had gotten worse, etc. Your husband should definitely have a full discussion with your oncologist about how much oxi would (should) to be taken vs. the increased side effects the addtional oxi would influence. IOW..there's no pat answer. It depends on the individual.

His oncologist was shocked he reacted this way. Nothing indicated he would and he has basically sailed through the first 8 rounds. I guess the body just said enough! Do you think she will try to add it back in for round 10?

My DH had a reaction to the Oxiliplatin about halfway through. He developed hives and had trouble breathing about 10 min into tx. Dr pretreated him with Benadryl (he received all 12 doses) and he did fine. Last 2 infusions of oxy were reduced due to increasing neuropathy.

There is work being done to change the number of recommended folfox from 12 to 8 or less. The benefit of the oxy sharly declines after 6 rounds. My situation is different as I have not and never will get to NED but I so wish my oncologist would have stopped at six. Instead I will live out the last of my life not being able to do the things I want to do. And I'm still going to die from this any way. it is all about the balance. if you are concerned have your oncologist go through the benefit and risk of doing more oxy. Then decide what is right for you.

I had the reaction and did just 5Fu. .. the cancer did come back but who knows if it would have regardless. Is there a reason why he would be switched to folfiri and Avastin? It's working for me.

Same! Couldn't breathe, itchy all over within 10 minutes. Should we push for her to try again with Oxi?

I certainly would ask the dr why she would or would not consider the Benadryl!

I had a severe reaction with #7 of the oxi. They stopped that transfusion but I got it the rest of the time with benedryl and the oxi diluted out and had no problems. My last treatment was canceled because my onc said I was probably toxic and there wasn't any benefit to get my last treatment.
