Port question

Postby pantufla » Wed May 04, 2016 3:27 pm

DH just finished chemo on Monday. He was told they were going to keep the port in for 6 weeks just in case. What does that mean? He doesn't have his scans until October so how would they even know anything after just 6 weeks? Thanks group.

Congrats to DH for finishing chemo.
Are you sure they didn't say 6 months?
I know some people on here get it removed quickly, others wait years.
DH should have some input as to how long he wants to keep it.

I would double check with doc. Also, it is up to him if he wants to keep it longer. I still have mine and not taking it out any time soon. Mine doesn't bother me plus it's nice for scans and blood draws as my veins are crappy. I just hope I don't need it for more chemo!

I still have mine at three years...My Onc wanted to remove mine at my second year. I just couldn't justify removing it since I was never a lucky person and knew if I did my cancer would return.

On Monday I had to have a PET scan and a MRI since my second cancer...melanoma might have metastasized. It took four techs to find a vein since my once good arm now have small rolling veins and kept blowing them out. I'm thankful that I kept my port cause there's no telling how much worst these veins would have been if I hadn't. And if my melanoma did metastasized it will mean more chemo.

Mine was taken out few weeks after first chemo round when I was declared NED, but cancer came back by 3 month check and I had to have second one put in. I know you want to put this all behind you as fast as possible, but no harm in leaving it in for a while. Just have to get it flushed every 4-6 weeks.

Thanks everyone. I let him and the doc decide. I know hubby doesn't want to wait too long. ;)
