Newly diagnosed, now my mom

Postby Youngjen81 » Tue May 03, 2016 12:06 pm

I joined this "club" of cancer in February. I am 35, my lovely, beautiful mother is 56.
She had her first colonoscopy today. A rectal mass was found along with 2 polyps.
My heart is broken.
She is going for blood work now, ct in a few hours.
Please send thoughts and prayers to the most wonderful mother and grandmother. She has been our #1 support since my diagnosis.
I hate this.
I am on a wait list for genetics, they are scheduled out until late june. I am fearful for my sons future as well.
Diagnosed at 35 after 8 years of symptoms
T3n1m0, clinical diagnosis, suspicious spot on iliac crest and left lower lung, unchanged
28 radiation, with Xeloda 3000 mg
LAR with temp ileostomy 6-21-16, pCR!
Ileus and blockage, 12 day hospital stay
Port placement 7-26-16
Fofox begins 8-2-16
Mom to 4 boys(2, 10, 11, 22) they are my world!
Mother diagnosed 5/2016
Clinical stage t3n2m0, cysts on liver and kidneys
Last day of chemoradiation 7-28-16, can't wait! It's hard seeing my Mom in pain

That really sucks jen. Butt I guess if you look on the bright side, she found out sooner rather than later because of your diagnosis. That has to be good.
Hope you both do well in treatment.

So she also has a moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma, 10 cm in. The CT picked up multiple spots on both kidneys and liver. We were told these could be cysts. Her ultrasound is next week and meeting with the surgeon 2 days afterwards.
Still pretty shocked how fast life can change.
Back to waiting.

I am so sorry! How scary. Genetic counseling and testing is a must. To be honest, I would push for your 22 to have a colonoscopy if he is your biological child. We were told to go 10 years out from diagnosis, but then the Gastro said he would have our kids get their first colonoscopy at 20 to be safe. Also, any siblings you share with your mom should go have a colonoscopy as well. No point waiting for genetics, since there are unknown genetics out there that might cause familial CC that we don't know about yet.

Just an update: Can't believe how quick the time has gone. I have completed my chemoradiation and am feeling 98%. Surgery is scheduled for June 21st. I had my 3 month follow up ct on Thursday evening, expecting results on Monday.
An in office scope shows my tumor is about 5mm now, pretty good response from treatment. What I like best is all the mucous and bleeding I've struggled with for years is gone!
Interestingly my genetic testing came back pretty normal, no breast or colon cancer genes.
My moms treatment starts next week, her first infusion is the day before my surgery. She us having a port inserted Thursday.
I requested 6 weeks leave from work to recover from surgery and begin chemo. I hope to go back part time prior, wait and see how recovery goes.
Thank you to everyone who posts on this site, sure has helped me through some rough days.
Good luck and God bless.

Yes 4 beautiful boys. The oldest is my stepson but he lived with us since he was 4, I was 17. He's on his own now, so it's just the 5 of us. Being a mom has been my priority for over half my life.
You'd imagine I would have learned some patience by now! I am going stir crazy waiting for my CT results.

Today we found out my moms liver and kidney spots are cysts! I am so thankful for some good news.

Just 1 week until surgery and I'm in full "nesting" mode. Cleaning, gardening, cooking meals in advance... it's great how helpful my 10 and 11 year olds can be. 2 year old is a busy guy though, keeping up with him after surgery and during chemo is going to be fun.
