Ground Glass Nodule

Postby eleven11 » Thu Apr 21, 2016 12:35 pm

In my mom's scan back in August 2015 the radiologist reported a 2 mm ground glass nodule in the right lower lobe periphery in the combined impression they commented that it "may be infectious or inflammatory in nature. Follow up in three months to ensure resolution." Three months later it was "stable." From having three month scans, my mom "Graduated" to 6 months (CEA still checked every three months) since the Onc didn't seem too concerned. Has anyone had an experience with Ground glass nodules? Dr. Google is scaring me.

Some of those showed up on my second to last scan, but by last scan, they were disappearing (unlike all my other lung anomalies). So in my case at least, it probably was due to some inflammation or infection. If the doc's not worried, no reason for you to be.

I guess I'm worried that it didn't disappear like some of the posts I've read on here. Also my onc is never worried about anything and on two occasions it was the big C!

Since day one with the first CT scan my wife has had three nodules or spots on her lungs that at first they thought might be mets, along with sizable mets to her Liver, Spleen and of course her primary. The lung things have not changed in any scans in almost three years, so the oncologist now doesn't believe these to be mets. So it's probably nothing in her case. All you can do is just keep an eye on them and wait and see.

Presently she is on her third chemo cocktail. She is in a trial using Irinotecan, Erbitux, and either Avastin or placebo. First was FOLFOX plus Avastin which pretty much killed off her Liver mets as they are all calcified, and the one on her spleen they can no longer see. But starting at about August of last year her CEA started to rise. Shehad been doing maintenence 5FU, and Avastin once every three weeks. CT scan in December showed net mets in her abdomen one pressing her ureter from her kidney to her blader so they put in a stint, and switched her to FolFiri, plus Avastin but that one didn't seem to stop the CEA rise, so now she is on this trial with Erbitux, which seems to be working as after 3 cycles her CEA is dropping again.

But still no change in those small lung things!

Idk for all different stages, but mine are every 3 regardless. Maybe in the future when/if no issues, but I don't see that for at least a yr clear. My onc is on top of everything. Small 2mm growth, she bumped me to 2 months with Combo PET / CT instead of usual 3 mo CT.

My husband, on his ct scan in 2011 it was noted a "Ground glass nodule in his upper left lung present . Our oncologist at MDA told us not to worry about it. He just had his last ct scan, 5 year check at MDA a few weeks ago and it was noted that "Ground glass nodule" has remained stable, no growth when compared to 2011 scan!

I wouldn't worry to much about it.

i have had lung things on my scans for 10 years now. some had been mets but others just sit there and don't grow. a lot of people if you pulled them off the street and did a scan of their lungs would have stuff on them.

I too have a small nodule on a lung that I did not know about until a recent scan remarked on it and stated "stable since 2011 scan so presumably benign."

DH has a 4mm nodule. It has been called a solitary pulmonary nodule, a punctate nodule (noted in this one as probably benign), a sub pleural nodule, a Subtle subcentimeter nonspecific peripheral right lower lobeground glass density nodule, etc. It has never changed size, or shape, even after months and months of chemo. So, we are assuming it is nothing. Apparently it is common to have these.
wife to DH, dx 8/15 stage IV @36, numerous unresectable liver Mets
resection and HAI placed 12/15
Liver resection 5/19/2016 15-20 mets removed (surgeon lost count, but it hopeful he got it all!)
Recurrence 7/2017 4 Liver mets and one possible lung met
Radiation on liver Mets 12/17
Lung met 10/18
VATS on lung met 11/18 started xeloda
chemo break, nothing seen on scans 6/19 Hopeful

It's good to keep an eye on nodules, although many times they are not cancer. I have three that I think we are finally finished watching, one is a 1.4 cm ground glass, another solid, and yet another spiculated. It is unnerving but often nothing.

Doctors will watch for changes and if there is growth, will act. When they are really small, pets, biopsies are not recommended.

I understand why you're worried. Just keep up the dialogue about the nodule with the doctor and trust his/her judgment.

I also have a lung nodule at 3mm and a bone (iliac crest ) at 2mm. Just watching every 3 months. Very anxious but doctors keep saying everyone has something somewhere that shoes up on scans. Gotta stay positive :) good luck to you.
Diagnosed at 35 after 8 years of symptoms
T3n1m0, clinical diagnosis, suspicious spot on iliac crest and left lower lung, unchanged
28 radiation, with Xeloda 3000 mg

Ileus and blockage, 12 day hospital stay
Port placement 7-26-16

Mother diagnosed 5/2016
