I'm bummed

Today, my dermatogist nurse called to say my melanoma has returned. I swear will we ever get a break from any cancer? it's bad enough dealing with stage four colon cancer but this is like a double edge sword. So I see another surgery coming at the beginning of May.

I've had basal cell skin cancer for close to thirty years...but it wasn't until after colon cancer and chemo treatment did the melanoma start showing up. It makes me wonder if there's a connection.?

Ugh--I'm so sorry, Jan. Do they know it's a local recurrence and not a new primary? Any info on lymph node involvement?

My doctor told me that melanoma tends to come out when the immune system is depressed. I suspect you're right about the chemo connection. I wish you could get some immune testing! The ND I see will order it if you want this done, but insurance may not cover, in which case the full panel runs around $1,100. PM me if you want more info.

I am so sorry to hear this......I can totally relate.....I am dealing with 2 stage 4 cancers myself....colon and prostate....both active. My prostate cancer has spread into my ribs and spine,taking hydro codon for pain. My recent ct shows more lung activity and I just had a vats.l still can not believe this is happening. Hang in.

Do you have lynch syndrome?

I was diagnosed with stage 1 cecum cancer. Two weeks later after my CT Scan they took before my colon surgery ...they found swollen lymph nodes in my chest.. I let them biopsy one near my aorta, and I have also Follicular Lyphoma who grade 2 stage III.

Now there testing me for lynch syndrome? I think skin cancer and colon cancer are lynch syndrome cancers..

You may ask to be tested? It is my understanding lynch syndrome patients, have access to immunotherapy drugs that are very effect at killing cancer..

Hi JD,
5fu makes you sunsensitive and prone to skin cancers. Unfortunately in the 18 years since cancer and chemo I have spent years on methotrexate and cyclosporine. Both make me extremely sun sensitive. I have had several cancers removed from various parts of my body. With my history they always surgically remove them. Even the basal cell carcinomas I get are dangerous. The last one I had was micronodular. Apparently they go deep and travel via nerves making them hard to stop and potentially life threatening. In the last six to eight weeks I have had a raised black spot come up on my lower cheek ,I see my skin cancer man on Tuesday. I have six monthly checks. Good luck with your surgery , Ron.
