Feeling Fortunate! - 4+ Years NED after Stage 3C Diagnosis

Postby JackAZ » Fri Mar 25, 2016 6:46 pm

I had my "annual" colonoscopy and received the good news that there is no evidence of disease (NED). I was told that unless there are other indications, I am now on a three year cycle for my next colonoscopy.

I have been a member of this forum for over 4 years since my diagnosis in December 2011 with Stage 3C colorectal cancer. I feel so fortunate to receive this result and hopeful to reach the five year mark. I feel it is important to let others know that there is hope after the diagnosis I received. I still have some issues but they are certainly manageable. My bowel habits have changed, and there are occasional urgency issues, but I have not changed my diet with the exception of avoiding large bowls of spicy chili (six months ago while visiting Philadelphia I ordered a cayenne chicken dish that downed me for over a day). I take a half tablet of Imodium each morning and evening. Today I still have neuropathy in my feet from the top of my ankles which occasionally is a challenge and disturbing but I can live with it.

After resection, radiation, and FLOX I had the issues with extreme diarrhea with several accidents along with severe neuropathy in my fingers and feet being challenged in buttoning shirts, tying shoe laces, and cold sensitivity. Each month and year those issues subsided to the point today that I am not bothered by the minor bowel and neuropathy issues. My gastro Dr. explained my current bowel issues are due to the location of my colon resection anastomosis being at the colorectal junction which affects the rectal "pocket" and probably causes my urgency issues.

Again I feel very fortunate to be NED and getting closer to the five year mark. I thank this forum for being the supportive and informative source for all us as we fight our battle.
