Infusion Order

Postby meatie » Mon Feb 01, 2016 10:00 pm

Today, my mom had another bi-weekly infusion of Folfiri-Avastin. It was "uneventful", except for a seemly minor anomaly: the order that individual drugs were infused today was different from previous infusions. Whereas previous infusions followed the order 1-antinausea med 2-avastin 3-folfiri , today's infusion went 1-antinausea 2-folfiri 3-avastin. Both my mom and I noticed it when it happened at the infusion center, but did not say anything, as we assumed that the nurse knew what she was doing. But after we got home, the more my mom and I discussed the unusual infusion order, the more we thought that it might have detrimental effects. Even back when mom was doing infusions of Folfox-Avastin, the infusion order was 1-antinausea med 2-avastin 3-folfox.

Does anyone think flipping the order for avastin and folfiri is harmful?

I don't think this should matter. I know some like steroids they give prior to help with se's, but others you can take during or after for se. As far as I know, it's part of the chemo and not for se's so I wouldn't think so, but I'm just guessing. If you are concerned, call the 24hr doc line.

I always had the Avastin last, followed only by some salt solution for flushing. So I wouldn't think the sequence makes any difference.
But I'd ask anyway: protocols are there to eliminate error. There should be no room to improvise.
