New met in 3 weeks???

Postby AngelaN » Wed Dec 16, 2015 9:21 pm

DH has had a bit of a rough Nov. Had RFA of lung met, ended up in the hospital for 4d with a fever, then a week later a pneumothorax (collapsed lung) and had a chest tube. All going well and he has a PET/CT on Monday. Today our oncologist tells us he has a new liver met - 1cm seen on PET. NOT SEEN ON CT 3 WEEKS AGO????? This makes no sense to me. In 3 weeks he grows a 1cm met?
Saw Rad Onc, SBRT is the tentative plan - but this doesn't seem right...

It was likely there 3 weeks ago but not picked up on. The CT slice thickness may have been too large to detect it very well. What I mean by this is different facilities/radiologists/protocols use different slice thickness on CT scans. A 1mm thickness is very precise but take longer with more radiation exposure when compared to a 2mm, 3mm, 5mm or 10mm. There are other reasons also for the different thickness use. Often times CT will have 5mm between each slice and a small met can squeeze in between those slices without being easily noticed. Small mets are not that easy to see especially in some livers especially without contrast. A radiologist might could go back now in hindsight and see it now. But when you add the PET, it is very easy to see even a small met because of the way the uptake lights up. Now it may have been smaller three weeks ago making it even harder to see. Hope this helps

Really sorry to hear that. My mum grew really fast tumours in her liver. Literally popped up. However her lung has one small met which is so slow growing it has surprised me. Chemo has always worked so well due to the rate of cell division but not an option this time due to the slow growth.
I hope he can put this behind him really soon as he has been through so much this year.
Take care

My liver met was never seen on CT. PET scan detected it when my blood markers kept rising.

It does happen, unfortunately.

Chin up and see what the next steps are.

Happened to me this past summer. Liver was clear in July, 4 weeks later I had a liver met - 1.6 cm. I ended up having RFA, seemed to take care of it. Started chemo 10 days after the procedure.
stg IV 4/2013 @34 - liver, ovary/peritoneum
Lots of chemo, surgery and good luck - still doing well 03/2016...
