Newly diagnosed aged 28

Postby Wishingonastar » Wed Dec 16, 2015 12:16 pm

Hello,

I wasn't sure whether to post as it makes this all seem more real but wanted to say thank you as so many of your stories have given me inspiration & hope.
I was diagnosed in October with T2NOMO upper rectal cancer and operated on 2 days later (LAR)- unfortunately restaged as T3 with 4 of 25 nodes showing microscopic spread... Not a good day! As my tumour was completely above the peritoneal reflection docs have decided to skip radiation as my margins were massively clear. I started chemo 5weeks after my op and just finished my second cycle cap and oxy.
This all was diagnosed 4months after my second baby was born (I also have a 3yr old girl). He probably made the tumour bleed (10lb big baby!) which led to my diagnosis so hoping he's saved my life... Terrified of recurrence though my oncologist has given me a 60% chance of this not coming back. Not great but workable. Anyways that's me, I wanted to say hi and thank you for this board and the colonder showing survivor stories, I'm in Scotland & the support is all aimed at over 60s... Not loving being the 28year old in the chemo suite Xx
Diagnosed 8th oct 2015 with upper rectal cancer aged 28. 4.5 months postpartum
LAR & TME 12th oct, no stoma.
pT3 4/25 nodes stage 3
Started cap/oxy 13th November 2015

Hi. I was diagnosed at 31, and I felt young then... so I can totally understand! Good news about the margins; sad about the spread but there are no guarantees for any stage. I'm similar stage to you, and doing ok thus far. Best wishes :)

I'm so sorry you are going through all this with a new baby you would rather be enjoying. Hugs!
You may feel alone at treatment due to your age, but you're not alone here; there are many here that are under 40 and some under 30. We understand much of what you must be feeling. Hang in there!

Thank you for the replies, helps to feel less alone though wish no one had this disease in the first place.
I know my chances are crappy but also know it could have been worse and I'm fighting with all I've got to stay with my husband and children. I had a very odd vivid dream of my baby boy a few weeks after surgery where I was taking him to a swimming lesson aged around 6/7yrs. Weird as I hate swimming & never dream of my kids being older. Taking it as a sign I'll get through this, maybe I'm wrong but it stupidly gave me more hope than my oncologist repeatedly telling me they're aiming for cure... Hope everyone is enjoying the Christmas run up. We're finding it hard but putting on our happy faces for my 3yr old xx

Welcome to the Club. and I'm sorry to see that you have to be here.

I have a couple of comments/questions:

I think it would be a good idea to create a signature and put all of the essential information there. The link for creating a signature is here:

http://coloncancersupport.colonclub.com/ucp.php?i=ucp_profile&mode=signature

Did your surgery include a temporary ileostomy? If so, this information should be included in your signature as well.

Hello,
A fellow Scott. Welcome. I agree being a smaller population it is aimed at an older age group, however with a rise in young people getting bowel cancer going up by 125% in the UK I think this will have to broaden out.
My mum is a stage 4 patient and has been for over six years. Cant fault the care she has had and we have both benefitted by all the knowledge shared here.
I hope the anxiety of recurrence settles for you and you can get on with enjoying your children without that pressure.
Kind regards
Stu

Hi,
Welcome to ths place nobody wants to be. Amazing bunch of people who can help you Loads.
I'm from the Netherlands but have lived in Aberdeen for a bit, wheabouts are you based in Scotland?
I was 42 when disagnosed and also the youngest in the chemo suite ( not by far though...) i usually took my ipad and headphones and watched kill bill or some other violent movie, as the natter of the old ladies and support team drove me nuts. not to mention the chemo seems to have the effect on me that I wanted to swear swear and swear some more

60% is good, remember stats are only stats and you are on the young and otherwise healthy side of the stats, everyone is different! Take it easy, hope you have support with your little ones as being on chemo and two kids sounds even more draining other 2 kids alone!!

Big hug!

So pleased you're NED Elise! Lovely to see even if it does come back there can be hope. I feel like a proper stalker for some forum members, I've read the good news stories so many times my husbands fed up of me reading them out!
Annemiek I agree with the swearing, in my head I'm urging on the chemo to hunt & destroy with lots of explicit language! I studied in Aberdeen & lived there for 6yrs but now live in my native Edinburgh (brought my Aberdonian husband back with me.)
I'm terrified but knew something was wrong even before symptoms, my body felt 'off'. Now i feel like I have a future again & hoping it's a long one. If I was in a car crash & someone said I had a 50/50 chance I'd bet on surviving, cancer is like one loooooong car crash & the mental side so far has been way worse than physical xx

Wishing - are they doing any genetic testing? Since you are so young it would be good to know if there is a possibility of lynch.

I agree 100% that the mental part of this fight is the toughest. You are on you're way thru now - hang in there'. I hope you have many happy years ahead with your babies.
