Colonoscopies...

Postby Pathfindergrl28 » Mon Nov 09, 2015 5:38 pm

Does the dread of getting a colonoscopy ever get better? I'm due to have another one soon... I had my first one last year where my GI doctor found a 12mm tubulovillous adenoma (benign). I was having rectal bleeding in stool, so that's why I initially seen him. He wanted to rescreen me in 3 years, but I asked for a sooner one since I had this type of adenoma at only 34 years old. I'm just dreading it so bad. He's a great GI doctor and the colonoscopy went well, but I did hate the prep. I just don't like being put to sleep. Thanks, just venting... :(

I hope you have clear results from your colonoscopy. I dread the prep for colonoscopies.

Ask for the Miralax in Gatorade. It's so easy to take. You taste nothing but Gatorade. That's what my group uses. You start with some Ducolax and then a few hours later the Gatorade. It says to drink every 20 minutes, but I am not that fast and I also start mine early in the day so I don't have to wake at night to go poop.

I don't remember how many I've had now. I did jump from every year to 3 years since I've only had the one polyp ever. My next one is Dec. 2016.

Thank you both for your replies... I had moviprep last time I think... It tasted like salty lemon sea water, yuck! lol My GI doctor said he thought it was the easiest prep he wrote for his patients. I'll have to look in to the Gatorade mixture though. Yes, I'm hoping this next colonoscopy is clear! Thanks again...

I'd have to second the Miralax/Gatorade prep, as being my favorite. Definitely not horrible.

Colonoscopies are a piece of cake compared to colon cancer. I don't mind getting my yearly scope. I had Colon Cancer at 34. I don't mean to sound insensitive, but I'd take a benign polyp and colonoscopies every year for the rest of my life over colon cancer any day.

With that said I did a prep the first time called Suprep...it wasn't so bad. A bit less fluid that the rest of the preps I've had.

I have had ten scopes now and nearly as many endoscopies. There is no pleasant way to have a scope. I just do it and then try to forget the previous 48 hrs of my existence till the next time, Ron.

Ha ha ha thanks Ron! I guess your right... any medical procedure is not fun. Ironically I'm an LPN, but have medical anxiety myself. I take Vistaril which helps before procedures, but unfortunately can't have it before colonoscopies since you can't have anything by mouth except a couple sips of water and BP medications. I guess I'll just have to suck it up "get er done" and forget about it after it's over!

As I've only had one, I have nothing helpful to offer. To be honest (even though I was worried they would find something-and they did) I kind of have a crush on my surgeon. He is mega hot. I was extremely worried about saying super inappropriate things to him under the influence of the crazy meds administered.
-Bleeding from bottom since Spring 2015
-Feeling chronically tired summer and fall 2015
-November 2nd 4cm tubulovillious adenoma with focal high-grade dysplasia discovered in rectum during colonoscopy-partly removed
-pathology for polyp/tumor removed shows negative for carcinoma Nov 5
-currently waiting to be booked into surgery to remove remaining polyp/tumour

Hi souprgirl! Thanks for your reply! lol I noticed you had a tubulovillous adenoma too, so did I. May I ask how old you were when they found it? When are they going to remove yours?? Mine was found last year at age 34. My GI doctor didn't look too bad as well for his age, and that definitely made things a little easier! :D He was pleasant to look at as they put me to sleep. lol He also had a very nice bedside manner, and that helped. Also, have you been checked for Lynch syndrome? I was negative for it.

I just had one last week and it came back with no cancer but high level dysplasia. Next CT scan. What happens next? If need to be removed can it be done laparoscopically or is invasive surgery needed.

You don't have to be put to sleep (that sounds so bad). I watched mine (although I like getting knocked out at times, with drugs of course, not by a punch, lol)
