Cimetidine and liver surgery

Postby mariane » Sun Oct 11, 2015 10:18 pm

Did somebody take Cimetidine before/ after liver surgery? When did you stop taking it? Day before surgery? When restarted? Any problems with bleeding? Doses? When restarted?

So sorry you have to wait another day... the anticipation is genuinely painful.
For what it's worth..my husband''s placement surgery at MSK was uneventful as was his quick recovery. No cimetidine. Nothing like the (well-managed) pain or duration of the resection and liver surgery... you have been through the grueling one already.

Further - An MSK plug from another family of fans: the entire staff from your onc team to the different technicians who will appear (often, alas) at your bedside is highly expert and determined to coordinate with each other. There is a culture of pride in their work and also an attitude of sympathy.

Habituee's tip: fourteen laps around a floor are one mile. Your ticket to get out and get ready to put that pump to work to beat this monster back.

With every good wish that Wednesday comes and goes quickly and well.

Thank you! I will try to walk as soon as possible. My surgeon wants to resect a small caudate met with HAI placement. At least he said that when he explained me his plan for my surgery. I think I will have a bit of liver surgery pain. Anyway there is no choice and I will survive any pain to beat this beast. I walk 6 miles every day now to stay strong and bounce back quickly from the surgeries.

My HAI pump placement and caudate's met resection went smoothly.

I am posting because I have official MSKCC blessing to take Cimetidine on chemo both HAI and systemic and without chemo. It was subject of more than one discussion on this forum. Cimetidine is included in my meds' list as heartburn protection. I take it 2x400mg. I started it 5 days before my surgery and restarted a day after it. I am continuing on HAI and soon on systemic chemo.

Thank you! :)

I have to brag: I walked Brooklyn Bridge from Manhattan to Brooklyn and back a week and a half from my surgery.
I am still a bit sore. I massage my scars which helps healing and soothes pain.

I have one more surgery in 2-4 months.

Congratulations on an uncomplicated surgery with good recovery.

Can you tell us a little about the admininstration(s) or discontinuation(s) of the cimetidine (and celecoxib if applicable) before, during and after liver surgery ? e.g. 1000 mg of cim tabs until x days before surgery (oid, bid, tid?), injectable/oral/none during surgery, and restarted 1000 mg on yth day after surgery. Thanks, and great hearing you're back on your feet.

I took Cimetidine 400mg bid. I started it 5 days before surgery and I have been taking it ever since with the only exception of the surgery day.
